hey,
Im getting ready to shape my first 5 fin bonzer. I came up with these dimensions but am not sure if they are ok.
#1)5’8" board #2)5’8" board
center 20" center 19 1/4"
nose 12 1/2" nose 12"
tail 15 7/8" tail 15 1/4"
If not, any suggestions, im trying to go short and wide and thick.
Im also 6’2" and about 150lbs
Hey Mustache,
your numbers look good, but I would mix the two boards together a bit.
It seems that 5’8" x 20 with a 12-1/2 nose and 15-1/4 tail will do pretty well.
This suggestion comes with a couple of questions.
Where is the widepoint going to be located?
What kind of tail shape are you planning?
The above numbers would be for a widepoint an inch or two behind center
and lately I’ve preferred a round tail since there are so many lift vectors
when rolling the board up on rail.
I think our website has a picture or two of the flex finned versions. These seem to
do better with the skinny side concaves (we call these “runners” but this may
not be the accepted nomenclature) that run between ventral fin pairs (again
nomenclature issues with “ventral fins”). If that is what you plan to do, be
sure to make those contours quite deep, and the main venturi concave a little
less deep. Drive is vastly improved with looseness still maintained.
Hope this helps.
George
hi “m[o]ustache” !!
" If not, any suggestions, im trying to go short and wide and thick.

…you "could’ possibly go thin and wide [and maybe a little longer?] if you are under 11 stone [154lbs] , and 6’2 ?!
I am 5’10 on a good day , and 155lbs , and I find my 5’9 x 20" x c. 2 3/4 " is really a bit too floaty for me …I could probably go 2 3/8" or even less thickness, for my size . The board I am referring to is a fairly wide diamond tail , though . As George said , with the different tails combined with double concaves , and 5 fins …interesting variations are available !!
What size waves would the board you mentioned be intended for , and DO they [the waves] have a bit of push to them ?
I find , at 45yo , I need a bit of push [harder paddling , or late[r] drops] , to get a board this size up and going fast . But that is just me , others may vary .
Just one more thought …would you consider maybe going to 5’11 or 6’ in length , narrow the board a little , and stay aroung 2 3/8" - 2 1/2" thick ? […just to have a bit more board under you when paddling [less of your 6’2 frame dragging in the water , that way ] , is what prompted THAT suggestion .]
cheers

On the subject of Bonzer dimensions, Can anyone say if the Fin positioning changes relative to the size of the board ?
Will a 7’6" bonzer have the same fin positions as a 5’6" Bonzer ?
Hey,
thanks for the replies. Anyway im sixteen, and i live in NJ. I was going to put the added volume in the board to accommodate a 6mm wetsuit in the winter. I wasn’t sure on widepoint location yet but if you are suggesting to pull it back then i will take your advice. I was either going to go with a square or baby swallow, since my quiver doesn’t have a swallow in it. As far as concave goes, i was planning on a single to double in between the runners and center fin.
I surf all year around so the board will come into play in many different types of surf, from summer mush, to the occaisional winter juice, depending on what i feel like riding. You live in west OZ so you probally get long period swell rather frequently, in NJ a really good winter and hurricane swell will be around 12-14seconds, most good swells anytime of year are about 8-11 seconds so that is push of what Ill be surfing. I was thinking about 2 1/2inches in thickness.
Let me know what you think
Tom
yep , probably stick with 2 1/2" thick then , in view of your comments about the thick wetsuit !
a squaretail would be good for a bit of added float / planing area in summer too .
Maybe go a tad longer , like 6’ , if you want ?
Depending on if you are used to thrusters or single fins may help determine where you are comfortable with having your midpoint . Also , what width nose and tail were you thinking of ? Draw out a couple of templates , and see which one is pleasing to you , is my advice , for what it is worth…[I usually just draw them out on cardboard , and cut em out , and stick em up on a dor , and step back and look at them ] …
okay , I hope this helps ?
cheers

well, it’s 11.40pm Wednesday night here now , so I’m off for the night , but I will check in again tomorrow , computer permitting …
Im am used to shortboard, but i have a 5’10" single fin. My nose and tail dimensions are 12 1/2 at the nose and 15 7/8 at the tail and center being 20". i used aps3000 to find what i thought looked flowing, and those were the dimensions it recorded.
here’s my quiver so yo know what i ride:
6’8 funboard
6’4" mini gun(Local Shop Shape)
6’4" sharpeye sbx
6’1" Aloha MG(most ridden)
5’10" single fin( made in the 1970’s and has no ID on it)
