Bonzer Project

Hey Shipman,

Please could you take us through how you planned this design and what sort of tools you used to get your board to this stage.

Did you use calipers or some other type of measurement device.

I’m looking at the bottom of a 9’4" Gun and it’s as smooth as a baby’s bum, needs some more taken off in places…

thanks

Hicksy

That’s going to be one cool board. It’s like Ben (Aipa) meets Malcom (Campbell). I guess the concaves will direct the flow and the fins and wings will let the board bite into the turns. How wide and thick is this board going to be?

Chip

The board was actually not too stiff because of the narrow outline (18 3/4) and it was fairly thin at avout 2 3/8. It was the log cabins machine and held in the most insane steep drops ever but you could still make subtle tail moves in the barrel and it held so good you could pump in these square faced sections. Man just writing about it makes me want another one. Too bad for the 4oz glass job, board lasted me only three monthes before exploding like someone straped dynamite to it

Does anyone know who is T&C main florida shaper? I can’t remember his name and I want another board from him.

Shipman, what did you use to get that nice beveled edge on the wing Your concaves are insane Props

I wish my bonzer bottom looked like that, but hey gotta keep it simple at first.

Chip sorry…Yep Moonlight is going to have fun glassing this one… they are the only ones I will trust to glass it… JP will have fun polishing it…

Five fin Bonzer, 6’-8" x nose 15.25 x w/p 20.75 x tail 15.50 x 2.625 thick…

Swallow tail, E-wings into chined rails up to 14" from nose…

I am calling it “The Super Bon Bonzer”

I am hoping to paint it this weekend and have it over to Moonlight next week.

Here is what I used to make the concaves and e-wings

Tools: Pencil, Tape, Surform, Sanding block, Stick, Semi-hard foam pad, soft foam and Sanding Screen.

I first use the the surform to rough out the concaves then I use the sanding block, stick and sanding screen to make a tool for shaping and smoothing out the concaves. use the soft foam for finishing

E-wing: Shape and depth with the sanding block, use semi hard pad block and sanding screen for finishing

take your time

Shipman, GREAT WORK. If my next project turns just half the good your concaves are, i’ll be the happiest surfer in the world…

Keep doing such a great work.

My mind is racing on doing concaves now Shipman. taping to get exact cuts makes me want to do my whole board over. Thanks for the pics!

Hey Shipman - I loved this entry on your tool list

“stick”

Now I know what I’m missing from my tool box. A Stick. (I already had a rock in there, but it’s a left-handed one so I never use it…) Dang. That is a right clever way to make a sanding block for concaves (actually wouldn’t that be called a convex block?), did someone show you that or did you dream it up?

Chipper!!!

Looking good. I really like those concaves on the Pinapple!!!

Given any thought on a glass on leash loop???

That board looks BONZER!!!

-Paul

thanks Paul !

I’m glad someone does…I’M still a bit unhappy with them, personally.

But, maybe they’ll ‘grow’ on me…I’m hoping that [somehow !] they will surf better than they look !!

The real test of a design is in the waves, of course.

[Something I need to remind myself of.]

And at the moment, there IS some swell, albeit howling ONshore, so let’s hope it will stay around, and the wind will swing around in the next day or two…

As I type, ‘Hicksy’ is on his way with my ‘Cooper’ which I just put a ‘leash loop’ on the other day…so, I’m hanging out [? ‘jonesing?’ ] to ride THAT again…it’s been over two years already since I last rode it !!

Yes, we have ready-moulded ‘leash loops’ here Paul…only about $2aus , too…so I usually have a few ‘floating around’ here, if anyone wants one !

ben

Ben,

I’ll trade you that single keel fin for a buch of thise moulded leash loops!!!

what do you think???

I’ll pay shipping both ways…

p.s. did you get the dimensions I posted on the SS post???

-Paul

Ben - Having seen your work first hand, I know you are a very talented and technically accurate shaper. You’ve really outdone yourself on that one! Great job!!!

Keith, The stick/foam/sanding block tool, Yep I came up with that all on my own…I think I am a direct incarnate of a caveman. I am always making simple crazy practical tools. I could use that left handed rock, all my tools are left hand as I am. uh except for my Clark planer. I got a unused right handed stick laying around here somewhere, I’l trade you it for the lefty rock…

John, Thanks for the kind words.

Hey Shipman ,

I was going to ask you a few questions about shaping but now I’m just blown away. I have 10,000 questions for you now. Awesome work. I think if I do my homework and practice every day I will be able to glass one of your Bonzers in about 10 years !

Hey Ray, after you glass that TTF board of mine you will be pro…

… a 6’9 ’ thruster ’ with , instead, two 7" side runners, and a back fin box !!

It was made by a local guy… the concaves were only basically thruster type double concaves, not deep [not when you have a thin blank to start with !!]

      ben

hi Oceans 23 !

…just wondering if you could post a shot of that Pavel round pin bonzer you mentioned , please ?

I’d LOVE to see it… it might help to give me ideas for my next one !

thanks mate , that would be MUCH appreciated ...

    ben

hiya Skeletor !!

how’s your bonzer coming along…where are you up to at the moment ?

 cheers !

   ben

" INCOMING !! "

…Okay, so I haven’t done the runners yet, but here it is with three finboxes in it now, at least !

RIGHT ON Ben!!!

Looks good!!!

Any waves yet???

-Paul
