Just spent most of the day at the Boost Mobile Pro at Lower Trestles. Interesting to see that most of the top pros had Glass On Fins. Kelly had plugs but I think there’s a sponsor involved.
Sets were over 8 foot.

Howzit stingray, One thing to consider is if the pros break a fin off they just grab another board. I would say that most pros wouldn't know how to fix a broken fin, they just give it back and their sponsors have it fixed. I fixed one of A.I.s boards a few years back before he was the champ and his dad Phil told me he was getting over 40 free boards a year and those were Merricks he was riding then. Aloha,Kokua
I understand the free board thing but why all the glass on fins? A few years back at the same contest no one would even consider a glass on fin.
Is it weight?
Is it simplicity?
Cost?
Had a discussion today with a professional glasser and it’s amazing how many fin systems he is required to install.
Most of the systems / shapers have very different needs or special set ups…
its cause there better i think
stiffer at the base
they are also lighter
The feel - Glass-on fins feel more solid, but they would also make the whole tail stiffer and more responsive - because you are in effect, bonding a couple of beams to the bottom.
Ray, the only fin system I saw being use was FCS, but most had glass on’s. Andy I, Slater and Taylor Knox stood out as the best riders that day.
Hi Stingray,
Not totally on topic, but I watched the contest on line, and since you were there maybe you can comment on this:
Everyone seemed to be riding boards with very relaxed looking nose rockers. Several of the standout performers were really stepping on the tail to keep the nose from pearling when reentering from the lip on the steeper lefts. Any insight?
Cheers,
Ira
Wheat, where did you find this thread? Its from the Boost Mobile all right… in 2005
This year it was more like 3 foot.
Ha!
I haven’t been on in a while so I did a search to see if there was any buzz on the boost.
Ususally people are criticized for not searching the archives - he he.
Maybe I’ll start a new thread.
No, good instinct. I think the thread you’re looking for is here:
