Bottling the Moment - TSJ article.

Would anyone have a copy of the Derek Hynd article penned by Andrew Kidman in TSJ vol 11 no.1?

Would love to read it if anyone has a digital copy to hand.

I’ll see what I can do. It may take me a week or so.

Cheers

Rohan

Time is flying away from me. Festivus was a good time and only a couple of weeks ago. I hung with some cool Japanese guys, got to say hi to Skip Frye and watched two fantastically good bands, then drove home to LA from San Diego at 2 am with a truck load of boards for the Mollusk shop out here. I was tired. Since then it’s been a whirl of book shipping, barely mediocre surf, another trip down to SD, mediocre surf and much stress and work in getting the Kidman book through prepress. Here’s some details- 240 pages, hardcover, drawn from Andrew’s 20 years worth of work, packaged in a screen printed box with an exclusive 10" record, limited to 1050 copies total, signed and numbered, $175. It’s gone from a book to a piece of limited art, and it’s really, really amazing. I’ll keep posting stuff and will update on Andrew’s planned tour when we start planning it. Keep this very very cool piece of art bookery in your thoughts for the holidays and beyond, guys; Kirk is in a full sweat making the above project (http://www.70percent.org/…-and-consafos-press/)

happen with Kidman, and the words and pictures I’ve seen from the book are so worth it–quality quality quality, and some of the most interesting interviews youve ever read of people like Frye, Stanley Pleskunas, MR, the Hynd piece you refer to

It is the work work work of one of the nicest coolest people on Sways too–Kirk posts as consafos here, for Consafos Press, his book label, and works, hard, trying to make a living at being a publisher

(He did not ask me to post this)

Damn, thanks Greg- I’m going to make the missus read that next time she’s pissed off at the piles of boxes in the living room and the Australians camped out in the spare room. Actually, I do nothing- it’s the likes of Kidman and Derek who make the whole silly surfing thing worthwhile. Bunyip, you’re sorted and here’s Andrew’s pic of Derek doing it right. I’m looking forward to the finless stuff documented in the Dale S thread in a big way too.

Bunyip,

Sorry mate. I’ve just gotten home and checked. My collection begins at Volume 11 Number 4. Isn’t it always the way. Now I’m interested in reading it too.

Sorry again man.

Cheers

Rohan

I honestly didn’t know it was in that book!! Can’t afford it, but undoubtedly worth every cent.

RDM - no worries (love the avatar - get to have my first ever vote in just over a week, I hope it makes a difference ;-0 )

Oh I know. I wish I could get it too. Amazing stuff.

I think Surfer magazine should tear itself in half and have an esoteric half with fish and eggs and hulls, stubbies, hybrids yet unmade, and leave the other half for the thruster stuff they usually have. On second thought, maybe a new magazine altogether, like a Kidman/Consafos global joint venture.

Best interview I have ever read…almost a definitive Sydney-centric historical perspective of Aus surfing.

One thing that DH doesn’t mention is his feud with McCoy and Cheyne.

Apparently Geoff and Cheyne became incensed by what they perceived as a negative bias from DH in his writing towards them.

Geoff, who is a fiery bugger at the best of times, grabbed DH by “the skin of his tits” and headbutted him in Hawaii.

Cheyne, who knows a little about a particularly esoteric form of painful massage known as rolfing, performed the painful procedure on DH at J-Bay. DH had Cheyne locked up by the cops on the day of the year, which still rankles Cheyne.

Cheyne if you are out there can you confirm these stories.

Since then I’ve noticed DH has become much more reverential in acknowledging Cheyne/McCoys place in Aus surfing history.

Great story - stuff of legend!

Thanks to Consafos for the article - just moments away from putting my feet up and reading it on the train. Now Lennox76 has really whet my appetite…

Another esoteric kind of Rolfing experience: http://www.maps.org/research/mcdermott.html

Bottle that moment!
