bottom 1st deck 2nd......whats the deal?

ive allways heard lam bottom first ,deck second…yes of course that works just fine…but why cant i do the deck first then the bottom? i mean its all glass just the same right?..just laying in a different order, anybody know what the down fall is? probally something about strength i dunno…thats why im asking.

I’m certainly no expert but I would guess that its so the bottom will come out perfectly smooth. Terry

Howzit have, there was a thread a while back about what makes boards twist and glassing the deck first one of the reasons that can cause the dreaded twist. Aloha, Kokua

I did the bottom of my 5’10 single first because I only used one layer of 6oz. On the deck, I used a single layer of 6oz. and then another layer of 4oz. S-cloth. Basically, I did it that way because I knew the top would take more time to lam than the bottom.

Good question. Kokua’s take on it sounds right. I remember reading that when resin cures, it shrinks a little bit, tightening up the fabric as it does. With one layer, there wouldn’t be as much force involved as with two. And once the bottom is done the board would be stiffer, so the deck could be applied with less concern about warping. Anyone else have some thoughts? Doug

As most of the shorter boards are freelapped, it is a real bitch to sand strings down on the flat, the roll of the top rail makes it sooooooooooo much easier. As for longboards, reverse layup come to mind?

well i was just thinking about it, and sometimes i want to do tint on the top and not the bottom…so if i lam the bottom first, then tint the deck the rails seem like they might turn out real weird , since tint dosent seem to stick much to cured resin.

the problem becomes, you have color over clear, the least bit of sand through, you’re toast

Yeah, sometimes we do reverse lams, for people who want special tint jobs, or what ever, usually on classic longboards. It never seems to be a problem. Otherwise, what Kokua, Mcding and Jim say is what I’ve heard\seen also. -Carl

Do it any darn way you want dude. If there are problems you’ll figure out why soon enough. McDing
