Whatever happened to the the dimple bottom boards. The turbulance from the dimples makes the water flow faster kind of like a golf ball. How come this is not used as a design feature on boards.Speed boats also use this theory with the steps in the bottom of the hull.
The dimples provide turbulence to break the water cohesive forces from adding a suction drag on the traveling object. A surfboard fin provides enough turbulence to serve that purpose. Dimples work best when they are on the trailing edge of the traveling object. Dimples at the leading edge will only add more drag.
Plus, you don’t want to go too fast anyway. If you go too fast, you’ll pass the breaking wave and lose your wave energy.
I want to go to fast
The dimples help to transition to the flow from the laminar to turbulent regime. Turbulent flow provides for less vortex shedding, hence lowered drag. In layman’s terms, the dimples allow the flow to have less drag. Dimples must be applied at a location prior to the relase point to have any effect.
Don’t you lose a lot of grip with it?
And I don’t believe that more turbulence around the fins (caused by the dimples) is a good thing.
Ride a jet ski if you want to go fast…
Used the right way these kind of design features could improve the way a board rides.I know that I would like some kind of speed advantage besides pumping the board. This would be for small wave boards of course.

80’s-90’s thing
rumor is the two split to the mainland to avoid some “issues” they had here on the northshore and became reinvented motivational speakers for the MTV crowd which eventually led to flava flav hooking up with rocky’s ex…
Someone once said they when they finally realized you could get the same results just doing a simple concave versus spending all the time carving and glassing in these things they gave up. If you want to cause trouble with your glasser then go make one of Earle Pedersen’s Jet Bottom contraptions as it has alot more dimples and goes real fast, at kirra at least…
Ride a jet ski if you want to go fast...
mmm how about a jetboat.
thought we were talking about surfboards anyway?
how can anyone say they dont want a fast surfboard??? or maybe there just a slow surfer and say they like slow boards to make them self feel better. who knows. but as a shaper for 17 years NO one has asked me to shape a slow surfboard… but hey i dont shape mals so maybe i’m missing some big mal secret? if that is the case enlighten me please!
if they really worked roy stewart would have been using them for years.
Fore!!!
slice this time (again)
Some waves kinda peel slowly so I could see a slower design to match the surf, buried tail, looking like dopey on the nose showing my crack and grabbin my balls, fore!!!
Ahhh memories.
Classic Longboards, shouldn’t really out run the wave, they need to be sucked down onto the face in the pocket for optimal tip time. And in terms of ordering a slow board I bet you have had people ask for you to loosen a board up before or for something that goes rail to rail better.
same results just doing a simple concave
oneula, you’re right about the W. Bros., because they were doing it on a conventional panel V bottom.
But what about doing the dimple bottom IN a concave?
Hmmmmm…
Off to the skunkworks we go… surfercross, I’ll PM ya.

Thanks Radio waves. yes you are %100 correct. I rushed into that last post of mine without really engageing my brain.
board are a constant give and take of design properties arn’t they.
I have been enlightened
… as for the jet ski, I use one all the time at kirra when its big, doing step offs, no rope. it is the most amazing experiance. once i made 4 barrelling waves in a row while chewing on a peanutbutter sandwich . we were piss our selfs with laughter. New kirra is made for step offs.
