bottom lam

Up until this point I haven’t shaped or glassed any boards bigger than 7’4, sticking mainly to shortboards. I’m doing a 9’0 longboard here in a couple days and was wondering about the quantity of resin for the bottom lamination. It’s going to be a blue/white resin swirl so I don’t want to run out. With a single layer of 6 oz. cloth, will a quart be enough?

Thanks --Ryan

hey stranded,

1 qt. for a resin swirl on a 9ft is going to give you a really muddy swirl. i would double it up. It also depends on how much of a lap you have. when i do three inch laps it takes alot of extra resin, not to mention patience. hope that helps.

So if I doubled it up and went with +/- 2 quarts, how much should I use of the white and how much of the blue. I want white to be the main pigment with blue swirling and streaking. So should I go 3/4 white, 1/4 blue? I know that none of this is set in stone, I’m just looking for some ballpark ideas. I know you’re pretty talented at resin work, this is giong to be my first swirl and I’m a little nervous. I dont think I’m going to use 3" laps, probably more like 2".

yea thats what i would do. darker colors overpower light colors extremely easy so you barely need any blue. You guesstimates sound good to me. Now its all about your pour techniques. Good Luck.
