Brilliant or Bollocks!

Looks like hes carrying two boards, new way to look at a ‘ONE Board Quiver’ !  how many boards can you fit into one design…

I remember seeing this step - hull style of board from a Hawaiian guy from the 50s or 60s.
Vid would be good.

my guess - at higher speeds the lower portion planes up and acts like a shortboard, at lower speeds, the lower portion sits in the water and the board rides like a larger planing hull?

My guess is that it's a load of horseshit to get attention.

lot of fin in that tight cluster too.

The story I read, might a been in TSJ, said they were squirrelly at low speeds due to all the contact surfaces fighting for control and not a lot better at high speeds. I'll search for the article. Its not a new design by 50 years.

  +1 for MikeDaniels coment.

I remember that article Ultimats.

If you’re thinking of the same one as me, it was “The Surfer’s Path”…

The shaper went on to be an activist in Hawaii… Can’t remember his name tho

Just found the magazine… John Kelly

hahaha, why don’t you tell us how you really feel Mike? =)

I have a lot of respect for Rob Machado as a surfer, and I think its great he's into trying different designs outside the box, apparently not too concerned about the pundits in the peanut gallery.

Thanks nocean for posting that up - one of the reasons I love swaylocks is that I love seeing the different directions other shapers are going, having fun with different shapes old and new.

Hey Mike - Seems like a lot of work to get attention huh?  Who knows…  There’s validity to the triplane hull, but that board does not look like it necessariyl adheres to some of the pertinent design features.

Damn can someone tell me how to create  a link to videos with a Mac, heres the footage of the board being ridden…

Ha think i did it:)

Rob is an awesome 'no BS' surfer, one of my favorites to watch, right up there with Tom Curren and Dave Rasta.

Cool video BTW, looks like a super fun board, definitely seems to ride like a hull.  'Course Rob makes riding anything look fun hahaha!  I had a hard time telling it was the same board, but at like 18 or 19 seconds into it you can see just a glimpse of the tail.  Guess he needs to perfect that attention getting technique LOL.

The board seems to need speed to perform, it looks like it bogs a bit in the mushier part of the wave, then really comes alive when it gets into a juicier section, but I think thats typical of hulls.

Great detective work Crisp! John Kelly did the same twin hull designs for Hawaiian guns witha bigger step at the tail.

In the video you can see Machado crouch and nurse it thru the bottom turns.

Yes. John Kelly did a design called the hydro hull. It was built at Inter Island surf shop in Hawaii. The bottom was pretty conventional except for the tail. There was a step in the bottom that consisted of a round tail outline, then a pintail that was raised above it.

These are scans from a mid 60s article in Surf Guide magazine. John Kelly and his hydro hull
