This project is inspired by Chipfish61 ,Hicksy ,Shipman ,and Neira.
Shipman made a killer fish from a broken longboard that he found in the trash.
Hicksy made the rocket board with an old sailboard blank.
Chipfish made the Brush Fire board frorm an old recycled board.
Neria posted a great thread on how to fix a broken board.
Several other Swaylockers have insipred me for this project…
Shipman and I have been working on building EPS boards. We got some foam and we got some stringer material. We made a hot wire cutter and we made some rocker templates. We ran out of money for that project and other things in life became more important…
So…
I’m out in my work shop one night drinking some Coors Light and I look up at that broken board in the rafters…
A long time before the Clark Foam shut down I put the word out to all my friends and co-workers. “If you have a badly damaged or broken board that’s going into the trash please give it to me.” What I was looking for was old foam to experiment with. Nice to have foam for repairs and for tests when working with swirls.
O.K…This was an old fun board that got snaped in the beach break some where in South Carlsbad in the summer of '05.
I stripped the glass and pushed it aside saving it for a repair job… Then Clark Foam closed…
Last week I pulled her down and…
I glued her back together using Lam resin and paint stir sticks along the stringer. 2 inch tape works good. Next time I’ll do the glue up with Gorrilla glue… On this board I went back and filled the gaps with Gorilla Glue.
I had lots of gaps in the glue-up because I approched the project as a joke. Now I wish that I had done a better job. The shape will be limited by the old FCS Plug Holes…
Looking for input…
Right now the board is about 6’8" long with a wide point of about 20-21"
Wide point is aprox 3" back from center.
Tail tip to tip aprox 8 3/4’
Thickness at center is 2 1/2. (Most of my boards are 2 3/4)
Thinking about fin set up and bottom shape…concaves ect…
hi Ray !
…is there much rocker throughout ?
can I see a profile shot on top of your shaping stands , please ?
cheers mate !

Hi Stingray,
Three years ago I made something similar to this. It was a 6’0’’ that broke while shaping (a rare case of rotten string). I cut it as you done, but I procceded in a different way in the next step. Instead of glueing the two pieces with lam resin and reinforcing the stringer, I glued just the stringer area using “superbonder”. I just put some bonder in the inner section between the stringer and rails to keep the foam stable for shaping. It kept the rails clean for shaping. I just took care to maintain the rocker continuous. After shaped, I prepared some resin with aerosil and filled abd sealed the small gap between the two pieces. After that, it went to the normal process of laminating and finishing, and it became a great 5’6’’ which I’ve seen riding without a crack until now. Note: no special reinforcement was done around the glued part of the board. Good luck!
A quad fin…a bonzer…a single fin. Whatever you don’t currently have in your quiver. Reverse vee. no vee. Lot’s of vee. Concave to double concave. Flat. Rounded and hull like. Roll the dice? Seems like the perfect board to experiment with contours or fin setups you’ve never tried.
I had lots of gaps in the glue-up because I approached the project as a joke. Now I wish that I had done a better job.
well, should you have the occasion to do it again, you might want to simply skip sawing the pieces at ~90° and just glue ‘em up after sawing in alongside the stringer for the thin wood pieces, a’ la Neira. That’ll not only give you a little more available length but also give you a less visible joint.
Give or take whatever foam got squashed when it was busted ( do your rocker alignment carefully) , it should be a good fit, requiring little filler or glue/spray foam.
hope that’s of use - nice job, by the way -
doc…
noone bothers to mention the weight (or lack of) holding the blank on the racks??
I normally put 12 on the board to start and progressively take them off. Once they are all gone its time to final sand/ pass out
What’s it gonna be then?? Looking real nice so far.
make a killer single fin!
Nose rocker is aprox 3 3/4
Tail rocker started out as 1 1/2 but the tail was really thick and I’m putting more tail rocker into the board.
Check out Shipmansurfboards.com. I’m looking at the photos and making a board like the “Albert”.
Shipman offered to let me use his templates but I’m just using the photos for reference and making my own shape.
Worked on it today but the battery in my camera died…
How about slight concave nose and concave or double concave tail with 4 fins?
Sorry Josh ,not going to do a single fin.
