My niece asked for a custom board (she is using some of my old designs). She and her dad came up with 8’6" so I decided to design something and try to make it before christmas. This is what I came up with. I wanted it to be relatively flexy since shes 100 lbs. Decided on no stringer veneer sandwich.
Board looks great, looking forward to this. But before you get much further along in this thread, could I direct your attention to this thread http://www.swaylocks.com/forums/posting-pictures-freezing-slowing-threads-oversize-pics
If you would take a moment to look it over, might help us both here. Thanks.
I had a pice of 2lb. Construction grade EPS around back.
moderator’s note: your images are not bad, not nearly as oversized as some. But they are still bigger than the computer screen. I reduced the pic to 60% of its previous size, and re-posted.
Did I mess up already? Read that topic and resized images to less than 500kb? What is optimum for you?
This is the top.
moderator’s note: pic reduced to 60% of its previous size, so now its sized close to the size it will appear in the post, rather than bigger than the screen. Went from 352.47 kb to 78.65 kb.
I added a cloth inlay to the rails. This pics is the second rail drying.
moderator’s note: pic reduced to 60% of original size. Went from 474.89 kb to 74.58 kb.
I had only one half sheet of Mahogany. I laminated it to the bottom while I wait for more to show up for the top.
moderator’s note: I reduced the pic to 60% of its originally posted size. Went from 373.85 KB to 105.78 KB.
I saw Josh Dowling post pictures of some reinforcemnets for his FCS plugs. So I tried it like this
Picture size is great in that last post, thanks!
Fin plugs look clustered close together for a longboard quad, what layout dimensions are you using for the fins? Just curious, I know there is no right or wrong, but I’m always interested in quad fin layouts. Here’s a recent 8 footer I did.
and here is the layout I used for this one, the toe in ended up being real close to 1/8" on the rears and 1/4" on the fronts.
I made the fronts at 12 1/4" and the rears at 8 1/4" from the tail. This is the first time for Quads for me. I wanted to stay close to the thruster formation I usually use. which is 4" and 12". I have used less and less toe in over the years and these don’t have any. My thought was to have them like a jib and main sail on a boat where the front fin channels water over the back fin to increase it’s effieciency.
Sounds a bit like the Twinzer concept - if its experimental (first time), might consider adding the back fin plugs for thruster, just in case.
I did a 500 grit finish. Got it done in time for Christmas. I think she’ll be happy. I am okay with it I hope she lets me try it.
waaaaaaaw awesome job !
Looks good!
Wow, sick looking board! i’m sure everybody would like some feed back on that fin set up! Well done!
I hope she’ll let me ride it.
I gave it to her today and we rode at Capitloa. Damn kids, she probably caught 20 waves. She said it tuned sharp and was fast (her other longboard is a Wavestrom so anything would seem great).
Congrats on the successful test ride. I always liked watching the first session of a new board + rider. It feels like the completion of the circle.
