Building up my supplies

I got a good amount of help yesterday on what I should expect coming into this proffesion, I have no intention of trying to take any business away from you master shapers I just want to take my passion of surfing to the point in which I can understand what is under my feet and have a board that I put my own work and sweat into so I can appreciate it even more. Been researching on what supplies I will be needing to start my first project and foam EZ has been a sweet site in which it makes it super easy for me to pick out what I want and keep it simple as possible. But I have also had a hard time on what I really need to get started, I can create a toolshed in my backyard but I am also curious to know if it is 100% necessary (dont want to poison the neighbors). I also want to know if I should put my cash into purchasing a planer as they seem pretty expensive and I have seen some debate on the nescessity of having one as a beginner.

Thanks, J

In regards to building a toolshed would this be absolutely necessary? I havent read that glassing and shaping needs to be done in a closed environement, and was curious as to how much work I could get a way doing in my backyard.

You can work on building up your supplies.......or work on building up your list of Suppliers ! .......or network with other Swaylock users to make deals...........

example....I met a guy through Swaylock's. The guy got a great deal on E-Bay....a big box of glass on fins....not too many people doing glass ons these days. I've done at least 2 repairs and 3 boards with these fins.....My cost.....a 6 pack of good beer......well OK ...a six pack every time I show up....but a 6 pack is less than retail for a set of fins!    and then we made some more deals....ect...ect...ect...........Ray

As a beginner;  Get yourself a Harbor Freight Planer and sander. They’re cheap and will get the job done until you decide if you are serious about board building and how far you want to go with it.  Lowel

I will for sure check both them out, and thanks for the link Huck I dont know how I missed it.

You need to glass inside. I once made the mistake of taking about 12 Waikiki rental boards for repair and they couldn’t fit into my shed at that time. Worst fucking time I ever had with wind and dirt. I couldn’t imagine getting a decent lam outside and there is no way you could get a smooth hotcoat.

Hey----I glassed one in the bedroom of a rent house.  I set it on two three pound coffee cans.  Had to lay down on the floor to tuck the laps.  Shaped it on a rack, under a tree in the back yard on Missourt St. in PB.  Came out pretty nice for a 1970 Hynson look alike backyard board…
