Sanded, pinlined, deck finish-coated.
Almost done.
Sanded, pinlined, deck finish-coated.
Almost done.
It´s done.
What I don´t like:
I made the resin for the finpatch way to dark and way to opaque. Wasn´t supposed that way.
The bottom lam sucks because I struggle to get the channels to stick and pull the lam tight without lifting the channels.
I got a few microbubbles/dry spots (pinhead size) in the lam.
But with 5+5 bottom it will be no structural problem.
What I like:
The foil and the outline.
The pinlines.
I fear it´s to small and to much performance for me, maybe I can make it work in empty lineups. It´s supposed t be an experiment.
It´s less volume I ever surfed and more rocker than my other boards.
Will be a hell to paddle when I get back in the water after my actual collarbone fracture.
I think I´ll try to build strenght with my other boards first in a few weeks, before risking a self-abasement with this one.
edit:
It came out close to what I planed.
Between 6.5 and 6.6 long, 21.7/8 wide, 2.15/16 thick - lets keep it simple and say 6.6x22x3.
Love the outline and pinlines, awesome work I say!
Amazing work!
What brands of resin did you use? I’m still in search for my perfect hot/topcoat resin that doesn’t leave a few bad spots
I´m using standard boat-building resin from http://www.bootsservice-behnke.de/
I´ve tried a few boat- and aircraft resins.
I like this one. Two different viscosity types (glassing and coating), 4 mixable hardeners, the slow hardener is ultra clear and UV stabilised, it sand easy for epoxy.
Only downside is that only the slow hardener is ultra clear. Together with my cold cellar the working times and the fliptimes are much longer than I´d like them to be (@ 18°C/ 64F it´s about 50 minutes workingtime and 8hours fliptime, getting closer to 40minutes/6hours when I heat the room to 25°C/75F)
I´d use surfboard specific resind, if I´d get it for the price the american and aussies get it.
But everything is appr. twice the price here in europe and only avilable in france and UK, so there is expensive shippig to germany as well. PE blanks in the 6-7ft range are nearly 200€ for example, plus shipping from france which nearly makes it twice that price.
Hat tip for a beautiful board. A lot of love went into that polish. I could never get that. I really like the shape of your finpatch, too.
Thanks.
I´m actually to lazy to polish epoxy.
I just sand the fillcoat as good as possible with 150grit and then apply a thin finish coat and leave it as it is.
I put a thin coat (1oz appr.) on with the a hard bondo spreader and pull it off quite thin. Leaves just kind of a contact film.
And immideately after that I brush a thin layer with light strokes on (appr. 4-5oz for 6-7ft board). Just thick enough that it can set and level.
