Burgers Publicity in the World Juniors

Just clicked on the World Juniors to see Beau Walker getting out of the water after disposing of No. 1 seed, Ben Dunn, on his Nev Burger. He was raving about how good his board was - don’t get better publicity than that, Bert!!

Here we go. While the rest of world pines away for the loss of their urethane fix, the world moves on as better tech is proven. In the absence of the staus quo will there finally be awakening?

Bert, why do I feel like we’re force feeding them thier own salvation when credibility is right in their face? Is positive change a bad thing?

change is good

that’d make a good tour banner

I hope this is the start of these boards and the technology going public so we peons can finally get our hands on some of our own.

Lieutenant Dan: Have you found God yet, Gump?

Forrest Gump: I didn’t know I was supposed to be looking for him.

Yes, I’ve always wanted to surf like a junior contest competitor! (in the sarcasm lies the answer to why you have to force feed: people aren’t hungry for the meal - besides, even if they were, it isn’t even for sale!)

Isn’t this a “Surfboard Builders Forum?” The materials are available. Build one!!!

In your dreams maybe.

Someone needs to tell Nev the same thing apparently! Can’t even place an order for one yet! ha! Seriously though, it’s an amazing technological advancement. Just not sure that it’s all that necessary or will increase the stoke 95% of surfers get from surfing. I’m going back to the future and shaping a wood board.

Someone mentioned in Surfermag . . . they started out with a ‘abnormal’ feeling in the post. Then misclassified it (instead of declassified) as saloman or surftech. Then someone corrected it. Then someone gave a sarcastic remark. then another threw in a irrelevant post.

It hit me that I’d heared about it in sways. But this was a year ago. And it based on the posts . . . not only that, is many are on the quest to surfburger themselves.

but surfing had this: http://www.surfburger.com (not yet built . . .)

go get em Bert and Beau

people will finally start to get it

my balsa got washed up on a boulderbank in three to four ft

just a few scratches.

its a great board. had a few teething probs and aint that pretty

but scored a few nice little barrels this morning

im stoked

at its performance and strength

Im with you on wooden boards as well marabout

id like to make one

its essentially the same deal except i use eps insted of ribs

but i feel that cloth and epoxy should be used on them .

otherwisethe term “quality craftmanship” is a bit of an oxymoron

as there not a ding proof as they could be.

Here’s my take on it from the other side.

“…when you’re going through it you just don’t want to hear it. Nothing gets through. You try and avoid those people that are trying to help you because you know what they’re going to say. It’s such a fine line when you’re trying to help. The best you can do is just be there for people when they’re really ready to find the way out.” *

That I think pretty much sums it up. Wait till you see where that quote comes from. Check the footnote below.

It’s so good can’t wait…

It’s actually Sunny Garcia talking about his and his brothers drug problems in the “Interview with Sunny Garcia” in the Jan 2006 Surfer Mag. quoted without permission, but with the utmost respect. Read the whole interview it’s very interesting. I say that because over the years I’ve seen professional surfers grow in their ability to really articulate their ideas brilliantly and honestly. It’s good stuff.

I know some people couldn’t give a rats ass; about the ASP, professionl surfers, or the industry, but why tarnish this post with negativity. It’s not directed at anyone in particular, so there is no point in attacking back. Unless there is a bright side to addiction. Then by all means proclaim, profess, and promomte.

But at the end of the day it’s a psychological issue. Because the chemistry, materials science, and routine testing repeatedly supports the claims of one material over the other. And the cult of personality issue? Clark v Loehr. It’s as classic a rivalry as Rusty v Merrick.

It’s come down to this, “here are the facts” v “I like”.

*SURFER MAGAZINE, the Surfer interview with Sunny Garcia by Chris Mauro, JANUARY 2006, p.82.

Mark,

My take on the situation is similar. I summarize it as: “The Devil you know, is better than the Devil you don’t know.” The great majority of surfers, and board builders, have NEVER known a world in which there is no Clark Foam. The “loss” of the old technology may well be surfings KT Boundry. This IS an interesting time.

Bill,

Good analogy with the KT boundary. I’ve been thinking the same thing, but don’t recall if I mentioned anything about it here. You know what they say about thinking alike.

Now here is where it gets real interesting. The only mammal to survive was as far as we know a small rodent. And from that eventually 4 million years later Humans.

So by extending the Clark / KT boundary analogy, from humble roots who knows how far this will eventually go.

Here’s the best part and one I never saw mentioned. Think about the feast those small rodents must have had. mmmm t rex.

All the backyard shapers can be feasting on the corpse of Clark. Depending on the volume of eps foam a peson buys I’ve heard blanks can be made as cheaply as a dollar a linear foot.

Look at it this way. How can K Mart sell those convoluted foam mattress pads for $10 each? Answer. Volume. They buy three trailer loads at a time. Three trailer loads doesn’t take up much space. Just three trailer spaces. I can find that kind of industrial storage space all over the place. When I was looking into the foam business ten + years ago a trailer full of foam went for a couple grand. Off the top of my head one can get about 1000 blanks from a trailer. Sell a blank for less than Clark say $40 and that is a lot of profit per trailer load.

We’re only a month into the Clark issue. With that kind of money up for grabs, there is no stopping epoxy.

Mark

The change is coming. It’ll be slow. I was in a surfshop the other and overheard a salesman talking about epoxy boards and I thought, “This guy doesn’t know shima.” (pardon my Japanese).

I just hope that when the change comes that you guys, the one’s who have been doing the R+D all these years get the credit and economic benefit that you’re due.

This one of Bert’s? … seems Beau’s on a pu/pe to me… maybe he’s surfing even better now?

This be the board…congrats to you all!

The publicity will probably go to whoever gets it to market broadly, making a great product is solving only part of the problem.

The sandwich construction and perimeter stringers, with flex, all sound great in theory to me, never rode one, but the reports from those who do sound like something I’d want.

Besides, I’d bet Surftech is not half as dumb as you think and could dupe this functionally at a fraction of the price and ten times the volume…

Good luck to Bert is bringing it though!

Next week is Surf Expo in FL and Greg is registered as both Resin Research and Parabolic or was it Perimeter Stringer Blanks. There is a lot of electricity in the air already.

I thinks this is going to be the most exciting Surf Expo ever. Friday is a big meeting for board builders to discuss the future without Grubby.

Then week after next is ASR. So guys will be takng what they saw in FL back with them to Cali and talking about it at ASR.

I’m bringing a folding chair and sitting by Loehr’s booth because I figure it will be the hot spot. (Also it’s near the coffee beer and restrooms. What else does one need? jk)

That is if 2323 is where I think it is. Just going off memory here from reading the Preview a few weeks ago. Now where did I put that thing?

But point is it’s only been a month since Clark and then it was holidays and now it’s show time coming up. We just happen to be in limbo right now this week. But once everyone gets together in one place and has a chance to talk together and get loaded together things are going to happen real fast. Grab your seatbelts.
