use a foam block, or clean q-cell , to replace the foam on a stripped boad['s nose , in my case]
sanding block , held vertically , to bring the foam to the templating lines.
pick a cooler than 100 degree day to glass
sand laps thoroughly
poured four different resins within seconds of each other
cutlaps …make the lap WIDE …double check the stick of the tape !
clear plastic makes it easier to see where the tape finishes!
[in my case,] I needed to use an exacto knife to cut the lap. [the lap “stuck up” in places …grrrrr!]
timing of the gelling lap is tricky …mine , although I thought it was dry , was not
10.sand laps thoroughly.
wide cheater coat not a good idea if doing light resin swirl colours …guess what happens !
?free lap on the bottom ? [carefully]
sharp scissors and dag-free cutting helps
don’t "save money " on cloth [mine frayed more than usual]
800mls resin on bottom , 1200 on deck [had excess]…only a 5’7 x 21 1/2" , remember !
don’t put a wide clear section of lam resin down the stringer , if doing light coloured swirls
100 degrees is too hot for polyester …rails gel quickly , while consumed with getting a good , dry deck lam …[D’OH D’OH D’OH !! etc]
dark pigment will cover a multitude of sins . [Adolph may not have agreed . But then again , he died 60 years ago.]
attention to sanding before glossing HELPS heaps …particularly on the rails !
epoxy gloss coat = LOTS of time , relax ! [BUT… watch out for flies , midgies , mossies , spiders…doing the death dive into the resin !]
okay … I hope this has helped someone out there !
[not surprisingly , I have photos of a LOT of these mistakes, too !
… I just didn’t want to post them on the “next one” thread. I wanted to try to get the board as good as possible , before showing what I had to rescue. ]
Thanks are in order for Grant . Hicksy did a sterling job with “the weapon of death” [belt sander] as I nervously watched…an exercise in trust and faith , for sure !!
And , hopefully…on my next “next one” , I will avoid these pitfalls I mentioned here …
do you mean the " the red waterfall " [ie : the gelled rail disaster shot ?]…
you LIKE that shot ,don’t ya mate ?
…well …
I guess it DOES show how much of a “rescue mission” this really WAS , and why NOT to laminate on 100+ degree days ! [39C]. Plus, someone may get a laugh out of it , [hopefully !] … as I did reading about "Skeletor’'s blank being used for a kite once.
…Well…
… IF this is what you are referring to ?
Here ya go , then … just for you , Hicksy ! […happy now ?]
I suppose that it shows off the " chewing gum vomit swirl " on the deck [and the awful cutlap attempt] rather nicely too, don’t ya think ?!
Jeez, Chip, you didn’t have to go to all that trouble. The way it is in the photo - with a nice firm skirt - you could have just crammed a couple truck tubes under there, inflated them, and had your very own hovercraft!
