Del Cannon is alive and well on the Big Island, Bill Thrailkill and others pitched in to bring him to the Windansea event, or he was at that time, haven’t heard otherwise

Before Shaggs was on the scene, I had the pleasure of going to The old Surfboards Hawaii shop in Cocoa Beach a few times. Dick would be there, Tabeling, Sharpe, maybe even Gornto …

Well, you might recognize some of the folks in this photo. Taken at the 66 EC Championships in VA Beach. Catri’s team took 26 trophies, in all. This is when he was still the Fla point man for Surfboards Hawaii. Among those pictured, I can spot Tabeling, Mimi Monroe, Bruce Valuzzi, Bruce Clelland, Fletcher Sharpe, Gary Propper, and Sam Gornto. About a year later, they all defected to Hobie, except for Tabeling.

Jim - that’s GREAT news about Del, I thought I read he was no longer with us!!! This is one case where I’d be very happy if I was wrong! Were you in Brevard when some of his boards were being sold here (68-69)? I think Cory’s Surf Shop in Indian Harbour had them. What a great shop - it was inside a drug store, just a little place between the rows of drug store merchandise. The address was whatever the stores was with a 1/2 tacked on. You had to see it! Anyway, Del’s boards were great but Cory’s lasted only a short time. Ditto for CREATIVE Surf Shop up the street, they had Bahne’s - we loved hanging there… Brevard has always had a LOT of great surf shops …

Hey Tony - that was quite a surf team, eh? Dick Catri was quite a mentor, and for the legend that he his, he’s still a very approachable and nice guy! The old Hawaii shop is still a surf shop after 40+ years … pretty amazing … Tabeling’s shop was real funky back in the late 60’s, surfboards and health food, his Dad was always there, smiling and putting up with all us kids… and Ron Jons went from surfboards to Levis … quite a time … thanks for the cool photo …

Inter Island Surfboards is still around on a very low key level. A guy I know that surfs Three’s a lot, Barry Morrison, has rights to the label. He had old time shaper Sparky Schufelle (sp.) doing his shapes for the longest time until a few years ago when he hung up his planer. Here’s the website… http://www.inter-island.com/

Sorry for getting off topic.

Barry on a Sparky

yeah, the guys that sold Bahnes boards parents had a vacuum cleaner shop next door, I was shaping about 25-30 Bahne V-bottoms a week and a lot of them went to the Satellite shop

Jim - actually rode a big old V from the shop, clear and must’ve been 8’ +. We went to school with some kids whose Dad was a Colonel or something at Patrick, they lived in one of the “Three Houses” right at the Patrick Cocoa Beach line. We actually used to surf on the “other side” of the old pilings that separated the base from town. We got lucky knowing those guys! Zero crowds over there! That V went pretty good for me too. Man those Bahnes were some pretty boards, classic lines, just real sharp … The downrailers went well too, and even later when Ocean Ave. was the dealer … jeez, who haven’t you shaped for!!!

Hey foamdust - that’s cool to know, and didn’t Sparky work for Noll way back? Cool logo, I remember the Reno board with the super kick in it too … very cool …

back to the (sorta) original of this thread - howcum when I go to Utube the Butch videos are “no longer available”?

…sorry, wasn’t trying to get sooo off topic …

In the early 60’s Sparky had his own label, used lettering like you would get at the hardware store to put on the front of your house.

Around late 62 or 63 Sparky started at Inter Island and had some very progressive designs for the era.

Sparky, like Rick James at Noll, lobbed off one of his fingers too.

A close one on the spelling of his last name is Sheffeld.

Inter Island had to be one of the best boards to get in Hawaii at that time, Brewer didn’t get a start until 61, they had Diff doing shapes, John Kelly shaping hydro’s and a lot of traveling shapers stopping in to ply their trade.

I used them to do my glassing for a while, a volan clear, with glass on fin to the hot coast, 35.oo$ and it was hard to come up with in high school.

I’d give anything to be able to relive those years, a skinny Haole going to Kaimuki, Waipahu and finally Radford, where the Haoles were pretty evenly matched to local enrollment.

Jim -

that’s all great stuff! PM me if you would - I have an off topic question for you … Thanks

Jim Phillips Black Butch model

Let us not forget Dennis Chote … one of Butch’s favorite foam slingers.

In the ECS Championships photo from left to right, the first guy I’m not sure but from there is Buzzy Foye, Mike Shea, Mimi, Bruce Valuzzi, Fletcher Sharp, Catri, Mike Tabeling, Joe Twombly, GP, Sunday Pataotas, Sam Gornto, and Butch.

… whoa … let’s see. A double (not single!) T band, triple stringer set - up, big tail block (do I see foam in there or is that all wood???), old school rail color set up, and a big black stripe … this is what separates the men from the boys to me - you can combine ALL that and make it look classy!!! I’d love to see that board in person and check out the shape - very inspiring! Love a deck photo if you would? Thanks for the photo … ps - I dig the old Phillips logo, very psychedelic without being cheesy …

Surfore,

That is one beautiful board. Nice to have someone with Jim’s talent do something such as a Butch model or tribute board.

Mahalo for posting the picture.

I forgot to add a shot of the nose… Both the nose and tail blocks are fin stock blocks.

The board is down at the shop, a 60th bday present for a customer (Puamana I think you know the gentleman) who is currently recovering from surgery, and won’t get picked up for a few weeks. So if you’re around Encinitas stop by and check it out.

Butch’s brother stopped by and took at look at it last week…awesome.

located a board described as a duke k - butch v.a. model with serial number 672481, a pop out?. says is 8-0.

Any one know if this has something to do with the Duke Team that Noll did? Doesn’t look like a pop - out with those stringers …
