Well I am getting closer to completion. I have completed the bottom and am ready to cut in the rail bands. The butterfly stringers worked in smoothly with the Zinger bonzer tail section design as did the nose concave. What I am wrestling with at this time is getting the Monarch Butterfly artwork done whether it is done via inlay or air-brush is the question. Attached is a board concept.
I was wondering if I have one of the local print shops produce a couple of inlays about 3 ft long and 18~20 inches wide (maybe in two parts?) or just have someone air-brush it in (I have no clue or equipment).
print it out on several shhets of rice paper then glass in i was thinking of an idea like that cept with certain kind of picture that arouses a certain gender and make it life size
Moondoggy, that’s a great looking graphic. I did one that size once, and I got it from a screen print company. The overall size was approx. 18" x 30" , and it came in one sheet, so I know it can be done.
The down side is: they have to do a setup for that one design and it can get a little pricey. I paid around $150.00. The upside is: once the setup is done, you can get as many made as you want for a reduced price.
Maybe get several made in different colors for a “Butterfly Series, Limited Edition”.
Post some pictures when you’re done. It should be an eye-catcher. Doug
paint it or if you cant or dont know anyone that can…I think there was a service posted here for silk screen laminates they could prob it, might be a lil pricey though
I was thinking along those lines. Actually, I was thinking of doing 1/2 of the Butterfly on rice paper and inverting the drawing for the other half. If I pay an artist for the airbrush that most likely cost $150 or more for a single instance.
I was kind of hoping that Shipman would add his two cents.
I will take a couple of before and after pic’s for the record book
Get a piece of posterboard, about the thickness of cereal box cardboard, draw the half the design and cut out the bits you want to see. From there you can either give it a light spray with some water based paint or trace around the inside edges. Flip it over and do the same. Colour it in and there you have it, plus you have a stencil for future use.
Hey MoonDoggy, wow that will look cool, I think what Hicksy said would be good way of going about doing something like that/. looks kind of complacated though… The rice paper way would be the easiest way to go providing you can find someone that will be able to print your Butterfly at reasonable price. I have no clues…
You are in the OB area?, I know that Todd at TDK used to have a killer airbush guy that could do amazing stuff. John Holly probably knows of a few great airbrushers too. Who you gunna have glass that for you? You doing glass on fins? The Zinger Bonzer is a 4 finner deep dish concaved Bonzer… like the Eaton one?
Ah there you are… I do have a family friend that is an excellent airbrush artist. I think he graduated from the art college up in Laguna. Maybe a good challenge for a straving artist There is also that new print shop across from MCRD on Pac Hywy (right next to the Deli and Drill Sargent union HQ). In any case I will make a template of the board and butterfly stringers and the cardboard idea seem’s straght forward.
I talked to Bhanes (sp? Fins Unlimited) regarding Bonzer Runners. He said it would take 2 days to make them. I was thinking of keeping to the same fin design as Mike Eaton or close to it. I have not got to that bridge yet
As for Glassing, I was PJ of Pacific Surfglass the other day and mentioned that I will most likely take it up there. Talking to Keith, the S glass seems the way to go. I ususally do 2 layers of 4oz on the bottom and 3 layers of 4oz on the top.
Hope you getting some of this wave action? Yesterday it was time and a half overhead at the cliffs and a little smaller today. Still had a great time.
You do realise that some very big seagulls are going to try to peck that off your board?
SERIOUSLY, that very thing happened to me the first surf I had on a GHECKO board . [a ghecko is a lizard-like aussie thing]
The ghecko was big , and had red eyes .
This seagull swooped me for ages , till in the end , I jumped off my board , flipped it over , and the seagull flew off . [the ghecko on the bottom of my board was much smaller , and had black eyes …
Guess what I did to the ghecko on the deck’s eyes when I got home .
[My mate , who saw it all happen , reckoned it was HILARIOUS !]
ben
[ I guess the strange thing really was … why didn’t the seagull go for my head …I mean , it couldn’t MISS , could it ?]
Hey - how about this? Check out some fabric stores, find a nice colorful print of butterflies. Fold it in half, cut out half a big butterfly. Do it as a fabric inlay, then some nice pinlines around it…add antennae… Bet it would turn out great, and cost about $10 at most…
OK, on the lighter side… Hmm, a butterfly shape on the bottom of a board. Along comes a big sea-going trout (hungry of course). Kind of like fly fishing without the pole.
Chip I was feeding the seagulls one day and I decided to place the Cheetos on the top my bald head and sure enough three of those crazy birds dive bombed my head. Had three bleeding peck mark on the top of my head… My buddy thought it was the funnest thing he had ever seen.
The bonzer runners do not appear to be angled very much. Reading some of the archives bonzer runners are set between 20~22 degrees.
I am curious what is the best angle for the bonzer runners and rear fins? That question also applies to the “toe-in” angle for both sets. Mike did mention in his write up that the positioning of the rear fins was critical.
Rich, Thank you for your offer! Nothing like keeping the stoke going. I will make a paper template of the board/stringers once I get the rail bands cut in and smoothed. I was thinking of purchasing a airbrush and practice a bit. Looking at various dual /single action, internal/external mixed, gravity fed… on ebay I was lost.
Wonder what is the airbrush of choice? Looking at the Iwata brands HP-A~C seem to stand out. I already have an large air system with stand-alone air regulator capable of 1-5 lbs. So many choices…
I will send you a note when I get to a stable point on the board. Thank you once again.
