Buys Futures LB Jig, Hijinks Follow.....

Wow. This got complicated in a hurry. Ricky Carroll built a beautiful longboard for me a while back. I loved the Futures longboard fin box and decided that if I ever started making LBs again, I would use them. So, I’m building a Spring Board Challenge “Davo” tribute LB gun and wanted to use that box. I called up Fiberglass Hawaii and ordered a handful of the boxes. This was going to be easy, as I had worked with the SB boxes many times and had all the tools. Of course the light finally came on and I realized that I needed the Futures jig to do the work properly. No way was I going to slop through this tribute board. So I called Fiberglass Hawaii again to order the jig.

Damn. The jig was $80. OK fine, send it. Oops, needs a very special router bit that costs $133. Long pause. OK, Swallow hard. Yes. Send it. Double damn.

OK, so I get the jig in the mail and as you can see from the pic below there are eight adjustment screws that need to be dialed in perfectly. OK, I can do this. Pulled out my big 1/2 inch fixed router. Eight screws.  I get them all aligned about about an hour.  But, nope. Not going to work. The jig will never align with an angled plunge and besides the stringer will deflect it and I will lose fingers in the process.

OK, so I go to Harbor Freight for a plunge router. $74 .  This is good. I probably need one anyway. Why, I do not know. But I am rationalizing at this point. Eight screws.  I get them all aligned in about 45 minutes.  Getting better at this.  Except in the fine print on the bottom of the box I see that it is only a 1/4 inch router. Kill me now.

OK, so I get on Amazon and order one on sale. $200. DeWalt. Deluxe. Very Fine. Like I said, I probably need one anyway, but I don’t know why yet.

OK, I’m ready to align the jig. Again. Eight screws. 30 minutes later I have it. I’m so good at this that I am doing it by sight.  No measuring.  This is going to end well. Patience.

I did a test run on some off cut foam. Home run. OK.

I ease the jig on to the board, double check everything and flip it on. Goggles, ear plugs and mask in place and in about 30 seconds a perfectly routed box.

Still licking my financial wounds, but all good.

Mike Daniel, did Davo, may he rest in peace, have a hand in this?  And does anyone need me to align their jig?  I’m good at it.

yeah…but you needed it. It goes with that fine looking shed.  I think Keith just threw away a futures jig and router bit…I joke.

Looking good.

There is a Different Jig for the one-pass futures.

it looks like this: Jig Plate for 3/4"and 1/2" Futures boxes

Why did you buy that one???

I have that jig & router and use them for standard Bahne boxes.

Under glass lb box good idea ive thought about cutting a recess into the top of a standard box at times.

Collar on the baseplate of the router would allow a simple jig that thing looks like it was designed here on sways

I like the shed too.

Thanks Keith. I think that one is for short board fin boxes. I have that one already. I needed the long one.

sorry about the quad set up choice and mixing brands. Should have stayed purist to the futures. It will especially pay off using the futures LB box with a more agressive tail rocker. What I see of your board it looks like a super clean shape.

Yes, I think it’s safe to say Davo “got you” there. I shouldn’t say I told you so but…

He may not be through with you either, watch your car bumper lol.

Happy Easter all!

Greg, Does the box have any extra material at the ends in case you are installing it in a board with a lot of flip and need to match it to the rocker?
Regards, Dave

Dave, no extra material at the ends.   I just made it a little deeper in the middle.  But I love the box.  ( I had better for all the money I have tied up in it, ha).  I particularly like the ease of capping the box without all the issues with the Bayne box.  The Bayne has been my standard for years, but this one is better.  My opinion.

all the best

I always wondered how that would work with a lot of tail rocker. Interesting to know.
