c. 1991 onwards.....

(Photos from ‘Surfer’ mag …used without permission…)

this is a young Shane Powell…

Whatever happen to Shane Herring?

last report I read , he was / is living somewhere on the north coast of N.S.W. , Australia.

His brother Brett was living in margaret river [w’ozzie] for a while …I’m not sure if those places are where they are both respectively situated now, though …

Yeah chip! That brings me back. I remember that issue (I think my Surfer Mag collection starts right around '91) fondly.

It drives my wife nuts that I hold onto all my old Surfer mags, but I occasionally break them out and reminisce… makes me feel like a wide-eyed grom again… some things are just worth hanging on to.

My fav issues to this day are the one with the images you posted above (it first made me realize that not all boards with the same “big 3 dimensions” are equal, thus starting my obsessive thinking about board design) and the ones with the first surfari to Alaska (I belive Parmenter and Mulcoy were on that one) and the trip to “Cloud 9” (Knox and Evan Slater were on that one). Ahhh, memories.

Yeah I remember those Webber banana boards well

funny how we used to think a couple of strips of carbon fiber down the middle of our boards would make them “unbreakable”…

They still snapped like twigs here in the country…

What about the other Webber banana Shane brother?

Ha! And I thought I was the only one driving my wife nuts with the amount of old issues of surf mags (especially in the bathrooms).

Keep 'em comming chipster

I wish I could scan the accompanying article that went with this , in a readable size !

[ the article was called “thoroughly modern silly” , Dave Parmenter’s voice of reason and common sense , in the midst of grommets everywhere going bananas !!]

the board Slater is riding in this photo is apparently 6’ x 17 1/2 x 2" .

…Shane Powell even went thinner …plus with that RADICAL double concave you see in the above photo !!

enjoy !

So…

THIS was the cover of the issue I mentioned … Slater , of course…

A question …[ is it still being asked today ?]

W-E-L-L …

this was Johnny-Boy Gomes’ answer, in 1992…

two of the articles in this issue were called …“blasphemy , or brilliance ?”

One dealt with the age-old "new school vs traditional " longboard riding argument [sounds like a swaylocks thread ?] …

airs , tail slides , laybacks , floaters …

vs. hang ten …

Thanks Ben!

I love that era of surfing (oh here i go again, i love all era’s at different times)

My 80s/90s thin narrow board rides well and goes nice and vertical too.

If i get a chance through the week (remind me) i’ll scan (if the thing will work) some shots from a 94 mag called “wave rider” has some good shots of Powelly etc and Tom Peterson on the cover at d’bah.

cheers Josh , I’d like to see a shot of Tommy Peterson surfing , I can’t remember ever seeing one of HIM , come to think of it ??

…The second part of the “blasphemy vs brilliance ?” article dealt with …

the Maui ‘strapped brigade’ …

Rush Randle , and friends …

there is a shop on the gold coast you’d love chip! a second hand book shop with stacks of old issues of surf mags that never sold. sometimes there all just modern but i found a few good pre 2000 ones too.

and in another womans clothing shop the roof is covered with perfect condition 60s boards including spoons by hayden and a McT balsa.

Whatever happened to …
