Cabosil/Q-Cel vs. pieces of fiberglass

Wondering if tiny slivers of fiberglass mixed in with lam. resin is an acceptable substitute for cabosil/Q-cel when filling in a hole in the foam.

Are there places where one approach is preferable to the other?

Seems like you would have to have one heck of a tape dam to contain resin without something that makes the resin more thick.

Good stuff -

Kokua is on about the weight - I don’t think one would want to mix a bunch of chopped glass in for a big fill, just Q-cel and cover with cloth for strength.  I’ll use Cabosil for a small hole fill puttty, as it adds strenght too.

I tried some homemade chopped up 'glass in lam. resin on a small void on the tail of my 6’8" last night, and it came nice. Some of the pieces of fiber actually helped span the gap and made the fill  stay in place and a little high, as I like it. It came out pretty clear too. I will get some Q-cel as well and give it a go. Always good to have options when fixing dings.

Howzit olds, THe few times I used both cabosil or milled fibers the resin got darker and not clear and with the Q-sel it is white like foam. Aloha,Kokua

Howzit olds_cool, Are you looking for something with structual strength or just a filler? If just a filler then get Q-sel since it gets lighter and expands the more you add to the resin. Cabosil and Milled glass fibers will only add weight unless you need some strength. Aloha,Kokua

Hey Kokua,

Good info. I usu. cover the fill with cloth for strength because I do not  trust the cabosil on its own. On a rail I think I want that extra strength (coupled with 2 layers of 4 oz). Whereas on maybe a flat spot on the bottom I could use the Q-Cel with a cloth patch. The main reason I asked about cabosil vs. milled fibers was from an aesthetic point of view. Seems like a clear fill is less noticeable than the opaque whiteness of the cabosil. I think the clear fill looks cooler too. I will experiment with the milled fibers. I am glad you pointed out the difference between cabosil and Q-cel.
