"California Tweener" build

After viewing the Pipeliner east thread a while back, I must say I was very inspired to say the least. I was so taken by the sultry curves of Balsa's creation, that I actualy begged Balsa for the outline. Balsa was kind enough to share the template with me and I have done as he asked and have shared with others at the Thrailkill mindmelt. Anyway,,, I have now began the process to replicate this exquisite watercraft. I'm starting with a 10-1Y, I got this blank from Mcding at a great price, thanks Lowell!!!

the plan is to shape and glass this at 10 ft in length, I like 10 ft'rs

this will get a ice blue tint on the bottom cutlaped to the deck, Im also planning on doing some faux clue cuts about 6 to 8 inches out from the stringer. I dont have the meens to cut and reglue blanks so I figured I could pull it off. I plan on keeping the deck clear and I think double pinlines.

Im still not shure how wide to go on the outline or where the widepoint is on the original 9-6 Tweener, as Balsa didnt put any dimentional info on the template.

I will shoot him a PM and pick his brain,,,,

heres a few pics to start it going,,,,,,

heres the pics

Hi Ken, I just went to the shop to check the original template: widest point is 23 1/8" at 8 1/2" above center. Have fun!

hey balsa

thank you very much as that is an important dimention

do you remember the final thickness of the Tweener?

Jeffrey? Could you please pick up your thickness calipers?

today

 I layed out the outline

then cut and trued the outline

I will plane to thickness ,, bout 3.25 maybe a little less depending if it looks right

so far so good

Mmmmmh… bringing back sweet memories…

hey Balsa

do you remember how thick the nose and tail was before you started putting the nose belly and rail bands?

just a ballpark guess,,,

Do these help you?

Sorry, I didn’t take such precise notes. If ever someone still owns a 10’2" Walker Foam blank, he might be able to tell you exact measurements (before skinning).

looks to me to be about an inch and a quarter

that is the nose ,,, yes?

is the tail a little thinner?

think man think!!!!     LOL

Ken, don’t get too obsessed with precise measurements. Do it by feel. You know more or less what thickness works for you. Just go with it and trust your eyes for foiling. Anyway, eggy and pinchy rails will make the board look much thinner than it really is at the stringer.

The Walker 10'2" is 2 3/16"  (N) and 2 1/8" (T) .....  12" from each end.

well thanks for that John, but it doesnt do much because balsa had cut off a portion to make a 9.6 and Im useing a ecotech 10,1Y, and this bitch is thick like 4" plus. I guess I will have to eyeball it and use the Force!!!!

I still need to take some meat out of it ,,, I want to be at 3.25" thick

well I got her down to 3.25"

and foiled it out

belly under the nose fadeing to flat in the midsection to V in the tail

rails are turned up in the nose fadeing to down turned egg something like 60/40 in the mid to soft down rails in the tail

I will give her a once over tomorrow before I do up the faux glue cuts

sorry the pics are shitty ,, the flash kept going off and the shadows dissapeared,, Im fricken tired!!!

ooh, another beauty on its way!!  I'll be doing a longboard or two next (my first longboard!), so I'm paying close attention.  Thanks for posting!

well its doesnt look as elaborate as Balsa's build , as I have limited tools and space so I can only do with what I got,,,

any way I trued up the outline (I found I had left about 4" of rail parallel at the wide point) that was an easy fix.

I noticed it in the pic I had posted yesterday

Then I marked out 6" from the stringer for the faux glue cuts

and masked them off useing 1 1/4" tape 1/16" apart (eyeballed it)

then ran a posca pen down the line

They actualy came out nice and I just may incorporate this on other retro type boards

heres a few shots

today I got time to lam the bottom and the deck patch

unfortunatly for me I miscalculated my working time and the refracted sunlight comming into my garage

this caused the first pour to gell up on me before I wrap one side of the nose

I was able to do some damage controll and save the nose

but

I had a few runs on one of the rails and got an uneven tint ,,,,, Dammmmm!

also a few gelled areas on the bottom and lower rail but they where above the glass and I was able to sand them down and got the tint fairly even

oh well... it is what it is....

heres a few shots of the damage controll efforts

after it firmed up I sanded it to match up and touched up a few air spots

lamed the deck patch and am ready to do the full deck wrap after sanding the air spot fix's

over all she's looking good

today I did the tail patch

this is where I put the logos of the kind buisness people I do buisness with

then I masked off for a 4oz deck patch at just past 3/4 up from the tail

and did a zip lap at the rail apex

and just because Swaylock's is where the insperation is from ,,I threw on a Sway's mermaid...

next will be the full 6oz deck wrap,,, in a couple of days...
