San Onofre is a must. Nice rollers and the right vibe. They don’t call it ‘Old Mans’ for nothing… just kidding Might visit Cardif or La Jolla Shores if your going south, though the shores are nothing special… just my learnin grounds.

California Street/Fairgrounds in Ventura (north of Los Angeles though). When everybody went surfin’, about half of them came here. Has a recreational vibe if the surf isn’t up or perfect. If you are asking about Baja, I’m still sworn to secrecy by a 25 year old pact…

Slow forgiving crusers? Mondo’s. When everybody went surfin’, half of them went to California Street. The other half went to Mondos… I think

Where I live and surf (North County, San Diego) has good surf and few crowds. Only Swamiis, Cardiff and Tamarack get crowded, but all are fun and have a good vibe. For a really long and mellow ride try Terra Mar in Carlsbad. Rarely crowded and pretty good rights and lefts. Also try Seaside Reef in Cardiff and Table Tops. Just ask a local. Everyone is cool. No violence, your car is safe, it’s all fine. You might get snaked, but I doubt it. I surf Tamarack daily (in Carlsbad) and love it. It’s a perfect spot for anyone, long or shortboard. It never gets as big as the areas north or south, but it is a great wave and doesn’t closeout. Just watch your stuff if you venture into Oceanside. Lots of theives there, but then, it’s pretty much for shortboards anyway (except the pier–that’s a longboard spot). Surf early because it blows out by noon (onshore winds) and if you want to avoid onshore conditions, surf between Swamiis and Cardiff Reef (again, ask a local…they are cool). Or, for quality surf, go to La Jolla and find a reef (Bird Rock is a great longboard wave). But keep in mind: Once you venture south of North County, the hospitality rating drops. Same with anything north of Camp Pendelton. People aren’t as friendly. North County, San Diego is probably the mellowest vibe in all of California. Of course, our waves aren’t as big or consistent as other areas, but it is considered one of the top ten places to live and surf according to Surfer Magazine. Email me when you get here. I’ll take you surfing.
