I used to wear the 30 day disposables. I would wear them surfing. I have since switched to daily disposables. I do not have to worry about storing them at night or losing them when I surf. I think it works out to be about 50 cents a day, so they are pretty cheap. I am near-sighted with a mild astigmatism.
Me too, soft contacts. Both my sons have been surfing in them for the past 14 years, me for over 30. And those boys are blind as a bats. If not for the contacts they’d be riding white boards with a red tipped nose. As far as losing them, you develop a reflex to squint when you hit the water which holds them in the eye. Every now and then you’ll lose one, so just keep an extra set with you. Lasik is they way to go, if you can afford it and are a good candidate, everyone should get it done. The only time you’re not a candidate is when your vision in changing (very young or getting old). All soft contacts of the major brands have UV protection, so this is a big plus. One of the main causes of cataracts is years of UV exposure which can double it’s intensity from the reflected portion off the water.
Hi Fatty,
I use Barz goggles, they were able to use my prescription (way over the top) and you can use them as flood in and out or like undewater goggles…
Set me back around $300.00 AU
I wear hard gas permeable contacts and they have never given me any problems, except for surfing beachbreaks when duckdiving a set wave, sometimes i get sand in my eyes and cant see if there is another wave coming, usually remedies itself within 5 seconds.
If he hasnt worn contacts before def go for soft lenses, much easier to get used to. It took me a few months to get used to gas perm lenses, and a few years to learn how to deal with dust in the eye or if it moves off the pupil, but then again I was 10 when I started wearing them, so maybe it shouldnt have taken so long.
Once again Sways pulls it outa the bag. Thanks loads everyone. Dan is 15 so should be OK for contacts (though this is the Nanny state and 15 yr old surfers may need protecting from the dangers of being able to see??? British governmental logic??). He is quite happy with glasses the rest of the time so it will deffo be the chuckable soft contacts. I didn’t get chance to speak to the opticians today, but hopefully my wife will get chance tomorrow.
Chipper, come home!
