Can a blank's rocker be changed by hand?

I’m not a shaper, but have custom ordered MANY Clarks throughout the years for my own boards. I then hired a shaper and then glassed myself or took it to a shop to glass. Kind of an armchair shaper, I guess you could say.

BUT, I almost always ordered custom rocker, usually with great results.

Now, however, I can’t do that. So, my question is: On a 10,1y that I have, can I somehow get the rocker adjusted BEFORE having it shaped? I guess it would mean removing the stringer (bandsaw???), putting in a new stringer, and regluing the whole thing and then bending it.

Now it’s starting to sound like a bad idea.

What are your thoughts?

Probably a bad idea if your going to do it yourself. It will get all twisted in the new glue up. you’ll need a ton of 3/4 Pony bar clamps and something to hold the rocker into place…you’ll be singing the EPS Home Depot glue up blues. Better if you have to do it, have it done by Jim P. he’s done tons of custom stringers and might be able to tweek the rocker. Heck he might be able to put some really cool stringers in for ya.

Best just carve it as is, and enjoy it with out turning it into a freek show.

depending on how much rocker change your talking about it can probably be shaped in. If it is a pretty major rocker change but still could be shpaed in and give the right flow/foil/thickness you’ll want someone with experience in making major rocker adjustments while shaping. Jim Philips would be another good choice for this too.

Mike, this is what a real shaper does with nearly all blanks, you have the rocker and then it is to custom tweak it to the flow in mind.

I am expanding my work areas to set up custom gluing for the foams that will be arriving, the trouble of trying to communicate rockers over long distances will be avoided by custom gluing on site.
