Can APS3000 or other CNC machines shape 12'+ blanks

We are exploring the possibility of shaping some of our fishing surfboards with APS3000 or similar CNC machines. Does anyone know of hand if any of the current CNC machines can shape boards 12 ft. plus? If so please provide the company name of the CNC machines, contact info or just point us in the right direction. Or better yet, is there one in Hawaii? Our current dems are 13’6" x 48" x 6". We are open to the possibility of building one too. We are new to CNC machines and technology so bare with us.

Mahalo,

D

I just ordered a 12 foot Stand Up Paddle board this weekend and I know that the blank will be shaped off a machine. Can’t help you with something in Hawaii. My board is being shaped in San Clemente.

Howzit Uncle D,

As far as I know the machines here in Hawaii won’t do it… The APS3000 I use will only go up to 11’-4" max and 27" wide max… Others with the APS3000 outside of Hawaii may do it but it would be a individual thing. I’ve been hunting for a machine here but no luck… I’m stoked with Chris at Progressive Shapes and what they can do for us…

Blane

BTW Uncle D, I’ve been glassing lately… Hopefully I’ll see you on 3-18-07 at Puaena and I’ll show you some boards with Q-cel acid splashes etc…

when I designed the machine, the target was a 10’ board, 26" width. I gave it a bit more not knowing what the future holds and ended uo wit 11’4" and 27".

the demand in stand up paddleboards as well as ocean canoes with length around 12’ was not predictable, but the APS3000 is quite easy to adjust to make the cutting of those boards possible. please let me know what area you look for a machine and I will advice the machine owner on how to proceed. 12’4" and 30"+ can be achieved with the standard machine, the long version can do up to 13’ and 33" wide.

The Elusive shop on Ualena Street has an APS machine. I was just there for the first time last week after hunting around for the shop I knew was down there someplace. I guess Miki’s comment about capability answers for the machine.

Mauka side of the street, last block before Paiea Street, just Diamond Head of the big Sinaloa taco sign. They are in the mauka corner of the parking lot, small entry door. May be locked when you get there but knock, there’s a camera and they’ll know you’re there.

Other thing to do is ask the guys at Wet Feet in Aina Haina where their SUPs are coming from and who/how are they being made.

Miki,

That’s great news. I’ve been working on an 11-6 in my APS3000 software but I wasn’t sure if I could get it cut. I could easily reduce it to 11-4 to revent that hastle of changing the set up to get 2 more inches.

Nice.

Who has the machine within an hour’s drive of Huntington Beach?

Miki:

Plenty mahalo! Manoa is going to respond with our requirements. That is great that the machine can do those larger boards.

Carve: I look foward to checking out those boards on March 18.

Thanks,

D

Don’t even ask Matt Ambrose in SF CA to cut it for you. He will hold on to your blanks and never talk to you again. I have never work with a worse business man, hell he will not even return your calls.

That’s strange. He returns all my calls and cut my stuff fast. To say he is the worst business man is a far cry from how I know him. A pretty savvy business man if you ask me, who saw the abilities of the APS and the quality of SurfBlanks Australia before anyone else. Sounds like you are one of those “I need attention guys” I here about from the glass shops and cutting centers. The ones who can’t pay on time, eat up the day with “how great you are”, and still wants things done yesterday. Pretty easy to call someone out like you are but not leave your name…

Matt’s a stand up guy, and he takes off way deeper and way bigger than you.

I’ve had good experiences with Matt. He has always responded quickly, has a healthy supply of blanks, and works with me on pricing.

Aloha Uncle D –

This might be outdated now, but years ago Craig Lockwood was starting to use the machine for long paddleboards and had problems w/ registration and flex while cutting. At the time he starting scanning 4 piece segments and after cutting, glued up the 4 parts. My 14’er has held up well after 9, or 10 years.

12+? Are you sure you’re not trying to stick a beer fridge on there?

Hey Charlie, was nice meeting you the other day. The limits of my machine are 27" in width and about 11’ 3" in length. This is just based on the distance I can move the machine before it hits something or the carriage falls off the track. I’ll find out from Miki if there is a good way to cut bigger boards. I tried once before to cut a board wider than 27" by lining up the blank offset from the center to cut one side of the board and then moving it to cut the other side…the result was the blank came off the suction cups, which is not good. Since then I haven’t tried it.

By the way, Elusive is the factory outlet, the milling service is Progressive Shapes. Our email is proshapes@gmail.com

We do have some Surfblanks Australia left and we also carry South Coast and Eskimo foam. Hours are 11-4 weekdays.

pau…aloha and mahalo!

We don’t carry Marko or any EPS blanks right now. You’ll have to contact Surflight Hawaii to get those blanks.

We can do the bottom rails now. It is not a full round rail, but rather a 130 degree cut. 90 degree being the square and 180 degree would be a full round rail. I’ll be releasing an updated price list for the bottom rail cut, which will be a minimal fee and also prices for cutting Marko and XTR. We been having to double cut some of these foams to keep them from melting and to get a nice finish.

Thanks

hello Al Bagget how are things going in santa cruz, have you hassled anyone into copying the Lance Carson boards yet. since your not quite confident enough to copy someone else’s designs.

                                                   natas

OK lets see, I gave him(Matt) the money up front to pay for everything I even left $20 over what he said the cost woud be to help pay for his travel to and from Santa Cruz. He had my blanks for almost a year(and he is still holding my money $300). I called him every week and left voice mails for over a month, and he would not return my voice mails. My name is Al Baggett, and yes Matt takes off way deeper and way bigger then me, but that is not what this is about. As a buiness man he need to stand up and take a count for what he does, and he is not doing that. I had people counting on me to provide them with a surfboard. Matt not only did not provide me with what he said he would provide me with but he would not even talk to me about it. I ended up having to have of friend talk to him just to get my blanks back, and yes the board is a Lance Carson but no one will ever see one like it since it is my design that I work out with Lance, so I think I have a little right to it. Matt told me he was having trouble cutting the 3 lb eps and needed to wait for the man that design the CNC that he was making to come up from OZ to show him how to set the machine to cut the stuff, but for some reason that never happened, since Matt will not talk to me I don’t know what happened there. As a busness man talk to your customers is very important, and Matt needs to understant this.

Since you know my name I should at least know your? Oh ya it is Baggett with 2 t’s. Not sure I understand what you are saying about being confident enough to copy some else designs. This is my design you can call Lance and ask him about it if you have the balls to do that.

natas

Aloha Chris:

We really would appreciate it if you learned from Miki on how to cut bigger blanks. We can also shape the fish board in sections too but our current total lenght is 13’6". I think there will be a big market for you in the SUP arena. There are a few shapers that want to shape the entry level SUPs that start at 11’ with a CNC machine. Even the Mike Casey mentioned using a CNC to rough out his SUPs. A year ago he wanted nothing to do with them.

Please contact Manoa or myself when you get this process wired.

Mahalo,

D

So come on natas who are you, you know me so who are you? I have been wronged by Matt and I have a right to let it out. You have bad mouth me but stay behind your post name, let me know who you are. MP me if you don’t want others to know who you are. I would never bad mouth anyone if it was not what they have coming, and I believe Matt has it coming, since he is still holding $300 of my money, he has my phone number and many way to drop off the money all he has to do is make it happen.
