Hi everyone, im looking for advice on a longboard renovation project…
I’ve got an old longboard that i shaped myself quite a few years ago - it is a basic longboard shape - 9’6" pintail singlefin with fairly flat rocker - Its got a flat bottom as when I shaped it I didnt really have the knowledge to attempt any concave or vee or anything!
Anyway its fairly been through the wars since i shaped it and is now in desperate need of a bit of love and attention, so my plan was to cut out and repair all the areas of delam and cracked glass, then sand totally back to the cloth, give it a complete new paint job with spray cans then fully re-hotcoat.
Seeing as i’m going to all that effort I wonder if it s worth trying to build in some performance features, i.e. nose concave, tail vee, maybe a couple of fcs fins to make it a 2 + 1? does anyone have any advice or experience of trying to ‘retro fit’ features into a board - obviously the fins are easy enough, but i’m very keen to hear any sage words about upping the performance of the board, as if im honest its a bit of a lumbering log (even for a longboard!)
Attached hopefully is a picture of it when first shaped years ago.
Good advice from huck and pheb. You’ll learn more from a new project. Having said that; In the 60’s when noseriders came into vogue; We would sometimes add nose concave to our pre-noserider boards. We did this by laying out a “sweet spot” area in the nose with masking tape. We then cut the glass out in the center of the tape with a router or a Stanley knife. With some sand paper and a small hand plain we would sand/plane concave into the foam and stringer… Laminate a layer of cloth into the sweet spot cut to the edge of the exsisting glass and then lam another layer onto the existing glass 2–4 inches overlapped. Hotcoat and sand. Sidebites are easily added using FCS plugs, as they are an after lam install any way. Forget the V. Build a new board. I only tossed in the concave re-do because I know how much the Sways Crew like to re-purpose. Nice way of saying they are cheap. Lowel
Thanks guys, I half expected that would be the sensible response…
Im a bit skint at the moment so building a full new boards not really an option just now, so will probably just stick to adding sidefins and give the whole thing a good once over. Thanks for the advice on the noserider concave Mcding i’ll give it some thought.
