Can I use old epoxy to seal balsa?

I am ready to glass my first balsa board, 9’5" with redwood stringers. I’ve got a gallon of 4 year old epoxy resin that has been kept in the house (no exposure to extreme temps) and never been opened. The shelf life is suppose to be 12 months. Could I use this to seal the balsa before glassing? At the price of epoxy today I don’t want to throw it out if it’s usable. But I certainly don’t want to mess this nice board up at this point. Should I thin the sealing epoxy some with acetone? If so, how much? I will use fresh epoxy for glassing. I plan on using 1 layer of 6 oz S cloth on the bottom and 2 on the deck …glassing on a wood fin. Any experience using old epoxy? Thoughts and suggestions appreciated. Thanks, Cal

Mix a batch opgf resin and see if it it licks. Make sure you slather some on a peice of foam to make sure it will still harden in a thin film. If all looks good the next day your OK.
