can i watch?

Hey,

I’ve made 6 or 7 boards, all traditional longboards, but I can’t seem to get my rails right. They are ok, and the boards work good, but they are a little too slow. I like them pretty traditional and i like to feel the board plowing through the water. I also don’t much appreciate the feel of a flat bottomed longboard because they bounce too much. I just can’t seem to find the balance of those old style pinched 50/50 rails that I am looking for. I think that I kind of overkill it in fear of having too flat and bounch and catchy of a bottom/rail setup.

I’m going to start this thread with asking anybody in the ventura county area that makes old style longboards if I can come watch them roll some bottom? I feel like I need to watch a pro do it to get further along in my shaping. I’ve just started, really, and feel like I’m at somewaht of a road block, and am about to start making a cedar board and want to get it right since she will be around for a long time, hopefully.

I’m pretty into the feel of convex bottom, and have approached it the following ways:

I have done a consistent roll throughout the whole bottom, sort of tried to copy pierpontscotts hansen competitor, and have gotten a nice sluggish board. But it wasn’t entirely right.

I tried to mellow it out the next time around and split the bottom into thirds. I rolled the left side to the middle and the right side to the middle, leaving a third of the middle flat. This was more successful as it didn’t bog down too much but still plowed through the surface chop.

I also recently measured an original da cat model which had the rail rolled about 6 inches in from each side, which is like half roll and half flat. I’m a total back yard guy so I’m just going on the way the boards feel and feel that I sort of know what to look for as I have been logging for some years.

When you all shape belly, do you make measurements along the rail as to how far you are going to roll the rail under? Do you just eye it and get it right every time? Any pointers?

Can I watch anybody do it? I’ll bring over a burrito.

Thanks,

Bobby

  1. go to taqueria vallarta

  2. get me a wet burrito

  3. bring it to me

aaaaand…GO!

Im up in SB but ill be shaping a few boards this weekend…shortboards but most of the concepts are the same or at least I can show you what I do and talk you through whatever longboard stuff I know.

shoot me a pm if you wanna cruise up!

edit…Ill be doing a 7-something hull in the next two weeks if youd rather see my roll the bottom/rails that one since thats the subject…

sluggish board might mean the rocker is not quite right…rocker is really important…

hey brandon,

you need a vallarta burrito. come get one.

matt. I have played with rocker and although it is certainly not near perfect, the problem I’m talking about is most definately related to the rails and not the rocker. I hope i don’t sound arrogant.

surferguy 80, i sent you a pm. are you the guy who made a carbon fiber hull a while back?

yeeeeeeeeep that was a fun one…good beachbreak hull, it lives in LA now and frequents Leo Carillo

Ha! I love that place. It’s accross the parking lot from my office. They have the BEST chicken tortas in town. Took afoaf there for lunch when he picked up his Spence. Yummy!

Corralles (the take out one) is my favorite by far…carne asada burrito w/no beans…and those deep fried cheese/jalapeno things they have are rediculous…

ooooooooh man.

Corrales is THE choice for breakfast. Chicken chile verde and bean burrito. (spicy) Or, if you’re really hungry, chicken-bean-chile relleno…mmmmmm…Ever try their veggie burrito? It’s perfect with their killer salsa and ice cold jamaica.

Rudy’s in S.B. and Carp for the BEST chimichangas.

Today, I almost died after a severe lapse in judgement…Del Taco!!! Fark!!! I WILL NEVER DO IT AGAIN!!!

Oh, and best homemade mole in Ventucky, Maria Bonita’s.

try the flautas verdes at Rudy’s, they’re EPIC.

im not so sure about their chimichangas though…the only one I had was about the size of a football and was pretty dang soggy…on the up side though they do make good hamburgers for cheap too…'whoda thunk it?
