Can it be done, 1 gallon

Heres the situation; I have two boards ready to glass, 1) 8’ with 6oz 3 layers Deck and 2 layer bottom 2) 7’-2" 6oz 2 layerd Deck and 4oz 2 layer bottom. I initially read one gallon (or 128 oz) would be enough thinking 60oz for 8’ and 40-50oz for 7-2. Just recently though i came across information that totally increased my estimates so my quesiton is what are average or estimated amounts from some of the wiser individuals on this great forum. Thanks and sorry about the beginner quesiton. Dave

Depends…your slop schedule left on the ground and the racks, how fast you work, how fast you want to proceed to next step.

If you don’t know the answer, plan on another quart for that sized board with triple deck lam.

with epoxy or UV resin you will need less than standard poly because you don’t need to mix extra for reserve/insurance… with epoxy or UV you can just mix more as you go, so you almost want to under estimate a little.

my first time glassing I did a 10’6"x24"x4" w/ 2 6oz deck and 1 6oz bottom, hot coat, gloss coat, patches (sand through and repairs on tip and pod corners) and some ding repairs on another board. All this took most of but definately less than 1 galon of resin research epoxy.

Even with that I left resin in the pot on all 7 coats, considerable drips on the floor, and put too much resin on the board (ie. did not squeegey off enough).

In the archives, Gregg Loehr has a usage guide for RR epoxy.

hi Dave !

…are you using epoxy or polyester resin ?

cheers !

ben

get two

get three

youre saving so much

take it from me

if you have xtra

you’ll feel secure

and have fun

but with less than enoough

no matter how you squeeze

the … job… will… suffer

…ambrose…

mangos and vanilla ice cream

just to check …

1 gallon = 8 pints .

1 pint = 600mls

1 gallon therefore = 4800ml [4.8 litres] .

Now , as you are referring to ozs , I assume that you’re weighing the resin [therefore , it’s epoxy you’re using , right ?]

So , my other question , to help me try to get my head around the quantities of epoxy involved …

how many ozs in 4800mls ?

cheers !

ben

[I ask , because I one day will be epoxying an 8’er.]

fluid ounces (fl.oz.) – which is what people really mean when they say “oz.” around here – is a measure of volume, not weight. in fact, measurements are different when dealing with liquid vs. dry.

1 liquid pint = slightly more than 473mL

so 1 liquid gallon = just over 3785mL = exactly 3.7854118 liters

and to get down to the guts of it… there are 128 fluid ounces in 1 liquid gallon by the U.S. standard.

and then there’s the UK standard for measurement…which just makes everything even more confusing.

Hey thanks for all the replies. Yes i am using Epoxy and am measuring in fluid ounzes. I am going to have everything cut out for both boards so if i finish the bottom of one with considerably epoxy left, ill transfer them and glass the second bottom. By the way thanks for the help. Im going to go with these previous estimates and just keep glassing till i can’t anymore.

I actually just tested some glass and epoxy and was pleased witht he results, so i can’t wait to start on the real boards.

Thanks Dave

Well, all I can say is you should be measuring in cc’s. There is a very user-friendly thread on how to do so, a page or two back…
