I can help you on your question about Gregs epoxy. After doing several boards with his epoxy system i have to say im convinced that its the way to go. No odor, water clear, 20min worktime with no gel time to catch you, stronger and lighter so you can use more glass and end up with the same weight. He also offers 4 different flex resins and 3 different speed hardeners. Good stuff.
clyde get in touch with Nick Beck the swalocks venue is not the best for the leap to canoe stuff the outrigger canoe magazine is good, or brad cole or the cole brothers You worked with them didnt you? how long is the mold? what about quebeka at ligghtnin…my friend topper is coming in nov he’s bringin a drum or loher poxy…you want his number maybe he can ship two…ambrose…lets make a polyester 4 man with hau bush sandwich
this place has a lot going on, racing shells, oars, winglets, dog sleds, etc. made out of all the cool materials. I talked to one of Pocock’s fabricators last week and he wanted to know all about hydrofoils for surfboards…
Ah, good, a rowing link, and . Ya beat me to it, man. The composite rowing shells have been way out front on this sort of thing for a long time. Very innovative people too.
Aloha Clyde - only found this thread just now. If I’m remembering correctly, Karel Tresnak (Outrigger Connection, Oahu) built one of his Mirage 6-mans with carbon and epoxy. Came out 1/2 the weight of the standard version - 200 instead of 400 lbs. Just found the site where I saw it: http://www.canoecamphawaii.com/news/june02_mirage.html. The Holopuni 3-man was designed on Kauai, but apparently built in Sacramento (!?) of all places… http://www.holopunicanoes.com/. Which island are you on? If there are any one-man manufacturers near you, you should go check them out. They pretty much all use vacuum-bagged carbon/epoxy these days. They’re hollow, so pretty fragile if you hit a rock or get in over your head in the surf. High end racing boats where weight matters.
Waxfoot, Great name ! We have a guy here on Kauai that is a great surfer and uses no wax! Might have to start calling him Waxfoot!! ( Gordon is his name) …
Thanks so much for the sites. If you ever have any ?s about glass patch work or restoration just ask !!
