Canoe Paddle Surfing Thread

Hi folks,

At the request of Carve Nalu, I’ve deleted the Canoe Paddle Surfing Thread. Deleting threads is not something I take lightly at Swaylock’s, but I feel Blane’s request was an honorable one.

Quote:

Mike,

The reason I’ve requested the deletion of the post regarding Canoe Paddle Surfing is this… Here in Hawaii the popularity of using a long canoe paddle to surf with is rising fast as it is around the world. Unfortunately because of the speed in which one can paddle some people are taking advantage of others by taking over already crowded lineups. Not only are they aggresively taking all the waves but because they are standing upright while paddling they are getting even more attention as if they are on a stage…

It has gotten to the point where the negative consequences of this form of surfing are starting to overflow to me in conversations and comments. I’m more concerned of where this is going if it continues the way it is… Even though I have not stand up paddle surfed in months people come to me to gripe about it. Instead of having that thread which pretty much just promotes the heck out of canoe paddle surfing, I’d like to do another that has more of a positive impact on the surfing community in the long run… I’d like to have pics of cool things for sure but a little more educating along the way…

I feel the regular Swaylock members and most guests don’t need much education on manners in the water etc… I’m more concerned about the many people who frequent the site who could be influenced by me in a negative manner and all they see is that this form of surfing will allow them to catch everything in site with no consequences… I’d just like to be a little more careful on what information goes out which could mean a better co-existence with future canoe paddle surfers and the surf community as a whole…

Please realize that this doesn’t mean all Canoe Paddle Surfing threads will be deleted or the topic is in any way off bounds on Swaylock’s – It means that Carve Nalu will likely not contribute to them.

Ugh - This is so freaking sad… I looked at another thread, and when I came back to look at the latest sweet pics of Carvu doin’ his thing… This.

Such a sad statement, not on Sways, but on the notion that people are kooking out… Lame.

Oh well - onward and upward - Thanks, Taylor.

Hey …what an honorable guy…

I gotta say though… as a shortboarder I knda feel the same about all longboarders…Paddle or not…they’re definitely wave hogs…just human nature I guess …

Wow. This is the saddest thing I’ve ever seen around here. The selfishness of a few spoils the joy for the many. R.I.P. Canoe Paddle Surfing Thread.

The never ending dilema. Shortboard vs longboard in wave sharing. The operative word is sharing.

heck I wrote a long reply this morning

is it lost? I’d like to re read it

as much of my stuff is inspired

I am interested to read it later when I have time.shux

…ambrose…

I find this VERY SAD and some what alarming. There was a lot of good infomation in that thread contributed by others and just Carve Nalu.

I think retracking an entire thread is a bad idea. It would have been very sad to have removed all of Carve Nalu’s entries in that the thread, but that would have been much more reasonable than removing the tntire thread.

There was info there I wanted to reference back to. Paddle sizing, board specs…

Is it possible to have the thread reinstated?

thanks Mike, your site is a great service to the community and I know these are difficult decisions to make.

Guys,

Let’s not get alarmist about this. This is NOT the beginning of anything. Threads are not going start dropping away like leaves from a tree in fall. This is a case of a user who made a very personal and compelling case to me about removing some stuff he contributed. I admit I was overly hasty in deleting the whole thread – I should have just deleted his posts – but I pulled the trigger and that’s that. Please try not to make anything more of it.

If you have some questions about paddle canoe surfing, post them. I bet they’ll get answered somehow.

Ambrose…I am forever in your debt.

Carve Nalu, I still respect your opinion.

Enjoy,

Swaylock

Guys,

Sad to see that thread go. I never posted on it but read every word carefully. Even my wife is stoked up to give it a shot (we just need a 12’ board now).

Carve - I fully appreciate your reasons for requesting the deletion of that thread. As I said - sad to see it go, but… I appreciate your integrity.

silverback - I understand your frustration. But, on the rare occasions that I surf breaks with shortboarders I am more than fair (you guys seem to need the extra waves) and have several times "Oi"ed on fellow longboarders who wave-hog.

Peace all!

Carve Nalu for Mayor of Swaylocks.

I second the motion.

It’s sad that this thread is now gone but I can understand why. Carvenalu, I received an email notification saying that you had replied to my post on that thread but I haven’t had the opportunity to read it (I logged in too late …). Therefore, if you wish, you can send it to me via Swaylocks private mail .

A great guy , great stoke , great selflessness in sharing …

thanks very much for a very inspirational thread , and attitude !

I sure hope you keep posting here on OTHER threads …your ‘tribute to waves’ thread , for example , is also inspirational to me !

GREAT job , buddy , you are a breath of fresh air here ! (we need more stoked people like you in surfing !)

cheers !

Seems sad to me, too…but kind of like surfing itself. An experience…and gone to memory.

Not that bad an end to so many beautiful waves, really. Maybe better to disappear to where we all can only recall the images, than have it languish deeper & deeper into the archives, bumped by a newbie with a question from time to time…filling with hundreds more photos of dozens more surfers trying out the paddle thing & posting their personal results.

CN, I know you don’t want the moniker - and I had seen others doing it for 2 years or more already - but to me, you’re the pioneer of this sport that I’ll remember. Not for being first, nor taking on the most spectacular waves, but for illustrating your sport with passion and bowing out with grace. Thank you.

Mike, you did the right thing, for the right reasons.

Silverback, sorry about your neighbors. Come surf with me sometime, we’ll have fun. And don’t paint us all with the same brush.

Thanks for all the good words guys… I think it was clear in my message that I will post another thread on the subject but with a little more education… I’ve already made my signature a message that’s loud and clear…

I’m still going to post pictures and I was even contemplating making a website about canoe paddle surfing that has crystal clear messages on how not to be an a$$hole in the water or a danger to others. One of the problems is you will have guys weilding a 12 foot board, 6 foot paddle out of control in a crowded lineup… We need to make it clear to all surfers that put a paddle in their hand to have some sort of responsibility and surf with Aloha. Its inevitable guys… This form of surfing is gonna get popular fast! I mean, look how many beginners are out there getting in the way or just being plain dangerous… Soon these guys will have easy access to Stand Up boards??? Then there are the good surfers who will take it up… Not all of them have manners!

I’ll make a thread soon enough with pictures and everything that will have lots of positive things to take this in a good direction… Thank you Mike for honoring my request… I know there was plenty good stuff in there but I feel confident it will be even better in the future… Thanks again to the members of Swaylocks for being cool about this whole thing… This is not the end, this is the beginning of doing what is right…

Aloha,

Blane

Carve:

Well put… You are a true Hawaiian waterman that surfs with Aloha.

Mahalo for being an inspiration and enriching so many.

Aloha,

D

By the way…

Who the heck is Brendan??? Hehehe…

I don’t know what you’re talking about Blane.

Hahahahahahahaha!!! I must be seeing things…Hehe!
