Cans of car spray paint.

In the 80s/early 90s I used to spray my boards with automotive spray paints in cans with no problems as long as I kept away from red. I have made two plain boards this year but fancy something colourful. Is there anyone still using cans, what brands are you using. I don’t fancy buying a compressor. What about brush painting and rollers.

Thanks Gazro

Why don’t you try resin tints.

don’t do a tint - life’s too short - make loads of decals and uv resin - life’s too short!

Hi Swifty

If i make loads of decals on rice paper with a inkjet printer do they bleed?

Do you have any tips.

Hi

I have done loads of Rice paper Decals and have not had one blead yet. I use an HP desckjet 970cxi. I would test one out just to be sure. If you are going to do loads of decal graphics. Lay a bit of resin under each decal before you put the matting over it. This will ensure that you dont get any delams under the rice paper.

Cheers

Hi Swifty

I have a 959c hp, so I may just go with rice decals, I think the spray cans we used to use where celullose paint based no problems with bleeding or delaminating with these paints except red. New spray paints may be different to the ones 15 years ago so may be safer to stick to rice paper.

Thank you Gaz

You should be fine. Those reds are a killer. There is some stuff in the Archives about red paints. I just avoid using them.

hi Gazro !

I use holts dupli colour acrylic spray cans [on the foam, masking tape stringer, let dry, peel away tape, glass]… beautiful !! [? cheaper ?],quicker, easier than tints… looks good too !!

  hope this helps...

Gazro, One thing to watch out for with auto spray cans, is the gloss. If you plan to glass over the paint, use flat paint, or you’ll have to lightly sand to get the gloss off.

You can buy a small and/or used compressor cheap. And auto touch-up guns go for around $30.00 to $l00.00 new. Flea markets are great for deals on stuff like that. I got a top notch De Vilbiss cup gun for free, because it was in pieces and the seller didn’t know what it was.

Spray guns will open up lots of possibilities for you, and give you much more control of the painting process. Just my 2 cents. Doug
