I saw this C.F. Fish last week and had to post it up here … 5’6"x20 and 4.2 Lbs. Vac. Bagged . This is about as light as I have ever seen. Forstall is allways up to something new . Wonder how much $ $ ?? I’m afraid to ask . Like to have a little bigger board made like this but i’ve never “bagged” one before . Wonder how hot the Black gets and if it could be colored .
Yes, they would get hot. Painting is an option. Pope Bisect has similar one available in 6’10" length. The Bisect has a breather vent. $1650 and worth it.
I made these for use in NorCal. They’re easy to take care of here, but I wouldn’t take them to Jupiter. Keep them out of the sun. I didn’t “bag” em so they aren’t as light as the should be. But I did just “bag” on a CF deck on a 6-1 single fin. Its really not hard. I used a refrigerator compresser.
I used a carbon fiber strip down the middle of one board and was able to cover it by using white pigment every step. Definitely get some color over it for hot climates.
But it does look pretty “cool” with a clear finish. Too bad it doesn’t stay “cool”.
Steve builds wonderful boards and is a great craftsman. While the carbon does get hot, the look is so awesome, most people are willing to take steps to keep the boards cool. Keeping the board in the shade or in a bag is not that difficult, and the look and the improved strength is worth the effort.
I have been building the KOLSTOF carbon fiber board for over two years, and have built them with either full carbon on the deck and bottom or with color on the deck, and carbon on the bottom. I figure that if your paying for the carbon, you may just as well see it!.
The cost for the carbon, if you can get it, has gone up dramatically. I was buying 2 X 2 twill for about $ 10.00 per yard and now the price is up between $ 40 and $60 per yard! I’m sure Steve will have to charge for the additional cost of the material. Depending on which weave he used, working with the carbon on the laps can be a bit of a challenge, but with a little care can be done quite nicely. Knowing how Steve works and what care he takes on his boards, I’m sure the board is worth every penny!
Hey Aloha , I spoke with steve last nite about the carbon fiber boards . He had a lot to say . ( is very hyped about them) What I remember is that he is using airplane tech. special epoxy resin and something called “post” curing where the board is heated in an oven to 165 deg for a while . Which means that pretty much it wont overheat afterwards … Like the airplanes sitting on the runway . And the wax stays on fine … your in the water … vac bagging and special cloth and resin . = very light and strong … Steve had a lot more to tell me about them but I can’t recall it … or comprehend it … He has some special vac bagging expert guy he is working with sorta like the “skunk works” of lockheed … making some crazy stuff … I’m gonna watch and see where it goes . Hope it becomes regular for him . Steve allready wants ALL of his boards vac bagged . Guess you can tell I like his boards … Have had 3 … mahalo Don

thanks for posting that , ‘Hotcoat’ !
the other day , I saw some red carbon fibre and some orange carbon fibre …fins .
I reckon an orange carbon fibre fish would look really nice !
Is this the same Forstall who I read about makes DEEP twin FINS ? I wonder if he would offer that option in a fin system for THESE boards …
…are fin systems easy / okay to install on / in ‘vacuum bagged’ boards ?
ben
any chance you could find out what Steve charges for these boards please, ‘Hotcoat’ ? cheers !
Hello … I am gonna try to post another pic of a board he made … Call it a thruster ?? it was also crazy light like 5.2 lbs ? anyhow you can see more of his boards on solosurfer.com website has prices also… that is thru solo Greg Loher has his shop in the next bay over from Steve so maybe he can shed some more light on what Steve’s doin … It’s to high tech for me to understand . All I know is his boards are allways great . He won’t let anything go out without being totally anal about it …“my opinion” And he’s a good guy to talk with easy that is to talk with but the high tech is over my head a lot of times… Aloha, Don
On the weight thing, I was having a discussion with Tom Wegener and checking out his wood boards, he was saying for nose riding and small waves you need a heavy board. Where as my boards are lighter . So I made a new mal glassed it heavy polished ,the whole bit. although it was a similar shape to my other board it was a dog , should have tied it to the fence.(in small waves) . Rode it in an over head point a while back ( give it one last go before it goes on the market) loved it plowed through the chop really positive in turns, so it stays. So the pesonal prefrence matched with style, ability and waves must also come into account with light and heavy.
Are these boards hollow?? Have you ridden a carbon board?? Im finding them to be somewhat lacking in the flex department. Mine rides excellent when she’s high and tight, but has a hard time generating its own speed…
Hey chippers, Carbon is black. That other stuff is a colored nylon i beleive.
