Nice looking spoon

Quote:

The carbon spoon was built by Damien O’Neill under the direction of Paul Gross in March 2007.

The spoon was vacuum bagged during the epoxy laminations. It was built for riders up to 110kgs. The spoon took 62 hours to build. The spoon was finished by Martyn Worthington.

This carbon spoon is based on the mold 7 built by Paul Gross. This mold was based on the original mold designed by George Greenough.

Every part of this spoon build process demands and is treated with the precision of a diamond cutter.

Price is USD$2,500

US$2500…are they for real???

it’s a steal at that price…(well, almost.)

When you figure in all the cost of materials, shop overhead etc, the rate of pay comes to probably max $25/hour I betcha. Not much for skilled craftmanship. Just the price divided by hours is a bit over $40/hour. How much do you pay the plumber or phone repair guy?

Wow! 62.5 hours is a lot of time dedicated to one project… so I would say $25 to even $50 per hour is not too much to ask on a labor of love like that!

I mean, think about it; When Paul Jensen first showed what his hollow wood masterpieces were priced at (base on what he thought they were worth with materials, time, labor, etc.), people freaked. They thought, “Huh? $1500 - $3500 for a surfboard? Is he crazy?” But when you think about putting 40 or so hours into a project like that. The prices set on those types of projects (labors of love, I like to call them) are well worth paying for when you consider the blood sweat and tears that went into something like that.

I can only speak from experience. I like to be fair when I make something and then someone wants to buy it. I want to hook them up with as much of a deal as I can. But when you figure in overhead, materials, time, etc., a “bro deal” can only go so far in this business. I will charge what I think I’m worth. If that’s too much to ask, then I just add that particular “project” to the others hanging on my wall.

There’s my two cents.
