Carbon fiber types? what should i do with my free carbon!?

Yo Fins!

I was checkin out your fins on another thread,…WOW! Nice work!   Sorry, I hope I didn’t offend regard the polyester comment. I’m just being pedantic. An epoxy CFRP is superior to a polyester CFRP, there is no getting away from that, but as you’ve only used a couple of layers near the neutral axis there wont be any difference (as you were saying all along). BTW I’m amazed how much fin testing you’ve done!!! “Proper Job!” as we say in the west country.

Respect

ah marty you're a pom , then , eh ?

you are forgiven then [ since you have ? 10 months worth of winter to cope with ??  ]

:)

epoxy must take a week [or more , perhaps ?? ] to go off without any warmth in the air eh ?

It's lucky you don't get the blowflies we get here , eh ?!  your boards would be black , with their carcasses ....

.... whereas , in our 36- 42 degree summers [ by the way , that's CELSIUS , not FAHRENHEIT !] , it  "goes off "  fairly quickly , on the couple of occassions I have used it.

but I MUCH  prefer my fin panels going off fast , hence polyester. And they are PLENTY strong enough for my liking . Still waiting to break one . Richo managed to break a tab on one once , at big Box. But he is a crazy man   haha

  oh yeah ,

and the smell of nap... er ....polyester in the morning ?

  can't BEAT that !

  hehe

  Ben[t from all the fumes ,  but ] Chipper , anyhow ...

:)

p.s. - if i had posted photos of every fin i had  ridden since [my 'chipfish61' days ] coming to Swaylock's , people would probably want me banned ?!

Fins, these ones of yours are sick, i want to make some!

"Fins: I'm 27!!! so i think when i came on here hwen i was 15, it had only just started. maybe i registered and posted? I'll have to check that!

a2tall: What is cut lap? I guess i can search for that on the forum and find out. Wetting cloth first sounds easier, if i was only using it for the deck then it would be easier as its just laying it flat. I'd paint a black area first so the edging looks alright"

Over 10 years on Swaylock's....What is a cut lap?....really?.......why bother with the carbon?  a little black paint goes a long way..........crank or kook....quality cut lap...........

Here's some advise from an Old Fart. ......learn how to glass a surfboard with standard 6 ounce cloth....with a "cut lap"...........

Carbon fibre later.......much later........

Its been years and YEARS since i was one here matey, sorry! I used this for my first board but i think i neglected coming here for my others,

I’m just a bodger and like messing around with things, making things difficult, thats why i’m thinking of making it with carbon.

Cut lap or not, my boards still ride now (almost!), and i enjoy the challenge.

.... cheers  !

six words for ya ....

 "  do it , do it , DO IT ! "

go for it , mate !

ben

Yep Fins, its officially been the shittest summer on UK record ever and we’re soon to be slipping back into a dark depths of a wholesome British winter. Good thing tho, is I’ll have plenty to keep me occupied in the workshop! You’ve given me “finsperation”…uh ha…I’ll get my coat.

With the RR stuff I try to get the workshop to at least 18 degrees to lam. Today it was 15.

Keep it unreal!  Marty

good on you marty !

" With the RR stuff I try to get the workshop to at least 18 degrees to lam. Today it was 15. "

...that's fahrenheit though , right ?  :)

  "i'll go get my coat"

...would that be a WHITE lab technicians coat ?

  clipboard ?

  pen ?

and ... thick horn-rimmed beer bottle Dame Edna Everage glasses ,  "lo-tech surfboard lab t-shirt " style ?

[Gary Larson , eat your heart out ! ... I wonder why  "the far side" has not ridiculed us guys ??...[yet ] ...there's still hope [he will] , though ?!  ]

The more I goose around with all my finmaking shenanigans  ,

the more I wonder if , someday , " the men in the white coats" will pay me a visit [hopefully without the butterfly nets , though ? :)  ]

...MADNESS !!!

 .... making fins is fun ! .... but , madness !

cheers !

[keep it unreal and cold eh Martian ...er ...Marty ?!]

ben[t] chipper

[keeping it warm and wet ,

  west oz style ]

Ben, the white coat has long reinforced sleeves and buckles on the back, perfect for when we become sun starved and vitamin D deficient and start going banzai loopy. Yep, its summer…you can tell because its raining again. No fear I’ve got a dry workshop with a 7’2" swallow tail quad on the shaping stands that needs some lovin with the planer. Damn it Ben, you’ve gone and distracted me with all this talk of fins. My mind is racing with tooling, RTM light, washout, flouro dyed cores. I’ve already dropped down to a 4 day week to give me more play time…now I’m gonna have to get the sack! Its all your fault Fins!

Sorry Beanis, totally OFF TOPIC! just went a bit fin-tastically mad. I’ll get my coat…

Hello Sir Beanis......When you learn to do a proper cut lap you will see surfboards in a different light. I'm sure you will enjoy the challange of your first cut lap.......I'm not insulting you...cut laps are very important in surfboad building..

or hey....fut'it ...lay out all that carbon without a clue...lay it out good and wet and long and strong....sand the F out of everything....enjoy the challenge and the toxic clean up....do you own a quality face mask?

...Ray...

The best advice I can give you is......throw all that carbon in the trash.....you are headed to a toxic wonderland because you are un-informed and  do not know how to deal with chemicals in a proper manor.

<'SNIP'>  " you are headed to a toxic wonderland because you are un-informed and  do not know how to deal with chemicals in a proper manor. "     <'SNIP'>

...hi there again , Mr. Bean !!

if you are going to throw the carbon out because you don't own [or live in]  a 'proper ' manor ,

  please , I earnestly IMPLORE  you ,

then ,  donate it to me instead !

Although no land baron myself , I WILL  make fins out of it  !

and maybe , when they unbuckle your ... er .... jacket and let you out to ...ummm... go surfing ??  [ " ....please , doctor ?? .... I'm BETTER now !"]

then , you will be enjoying life again

Meantime , till that happens , do you know anyone flying to perth west oz soon , who wants to carry carbon fibre in their suitcases ?  [despite the S-C-A-R-Y  warning , it may NOT kill you !!  ..... but , of course , you CAN insert the 'twilight zone' music here anyway , for dramatic effect , if you so desire ?!   :) ]

beanis ...

nice name , by the way ...

what does that rhyme with , again ?

:)

 cheers

  ben

fins, Beanis definatley does not rhyme with pe… hey! (!)

Yeah on the ‘throwing my carbon in the trash’ idea, i think i’ll keep it thanks.

But Fins, how much do you need? If you want any of the second thicker material I can send you some in t’post. You can make me some fins and send 'em back!

Yeah yeah all this talk of the UK being col, well… it has bee na shitty summer, but at least its not hot and sunny everyday,… man, that must just get really boring… (Probably)

haha ya funny bean man !

i'm right for carbon , thanks anyway

maybe I can send you a coupla small carbon inlay sideys one day , if you could ever use them ?

the last lot of carbon i was given [again from u.k.] was some kind of thick 'pre-preg' stuff , which unfortunately i couldn't sort out to use [everyone seemed to suggest vac bagging about which i have no experience ...

  ben

Yeah, I’ve never made one just seen a few that looked cool. Maybe don’t fully cut the tail off just carve out the foam from the deck side then strengthen with the carbon fiber?? I don’t know about the states but here in oz I saw a cool one by Jed Done a few years ago. Just did a google search and came up with this!! To give you some ideas. The one I saw by Jed the rocker in the flex tail was actually inverted.

http://www.surfinglife.com.au/boardbible/bushrat/

I’ve also seen one by Mark Rabbage and apparently Michael Rae does a flex tail too.

yeah! carbon sideys sound sweet.

enjoy the sun you bugger!

What about a carbon fiber flex tail? Could be a fun experiment.  If you don’t want to shape a new board you could cut the tail of an old behind the front fin boxes then lay up the carbon and put a glass on fin at the back?

that sounds amazing, you mean cut the back off an old board and make a whole new back end?

Great idea Marsh! , may have a go at doing that with one of my old boards:)

hi beanie !!

"IF" you decide to go the flextail use for that c.f. material ....

mickmackie

[also south coast n.s.w.,australia]   does the 'winterstick fish ',  with MASSIVE flextails , also ...

Worth checking , for inspiration ...the "lost in the ether " movie features some footage of him surfing them , lots of design ideas , and modifications ...

  cheers
