Carbon Perimiter Railed Fishy (((pics)))

I mentioned in a recent thread that i was working on a stringerless carbon fiber railed speed dialer…happy to say its done and in the owner’s hands tonight!

the glassing schedule went as follows:

top and bottom laminated w/6oz…looked like a vanilla fish

then the carbon rails were lamintated w/a bunch of peel ply and pressure to get a tight bond and the right resin/carbon ratio…then a layer of 4oz capping the deck/rails to seal the deal.

had fun with this one, enjoy the photos!

more of these coming soon, but before those, some paulownia experiments…

Sweet!!

Bet the owner is one happy guy right about now. The board turned out really nice. Did you do the deck pin striping? Its pretty sweet too.

yessir

a few other cool ones…cutting the carbon on the rails:

looks great

Absolutely “sen - bloody - sational” … thats Australian for really really good !!

I hope your client really appreciates what you’ve done for him/her

When my eyes stop rolling around in the back of my head I’ll have a slow lustfull look at the pictures

Congrat’s old mate … well done !!

Wow! looks delicious.

Spiffing!

Great stuff, surferguy80! Can I ask you – in this pic, what do the dots along the stringer signify?

the dots on the glue line are my primary fin dots…i place the measurements on the center line and move out to the rail from there to make sure im at the right spot, or if i need to go back and adjust a dot i can get at it quickly

this is the sound of me standing and applauding!

that looks awsome!

i bet it’s a blast to surf.

any chance of a ride report?

what ounce of carbon?

any reason why you didn’t put the carbon on the foam then glassed over?

Two questions… do you easily see your tape through the carbon tape for cutting?

Do you have photos of the steps where you laminate the rails, put the peel ply etc… then in the bag?

I’m pretty sure those rails were laid up by hand.

you cant see the tape line under the carbon in about 80% of the board, so you just have to take it slow and peel as you go to make sure youre on the right spot.

the carbon was layed up by hand and then peel ply was stretched over the rails to “suck” it down and get a better resin ratio than by hand.

so so so sick good job

I happened upon surferguy80’s shop while he was adding the carbon. Chemical sensitivity kept me from checking it out up close. Finished product looks awesome!

awesome!!!

now i have something to look ahead for and try on one of my future boards.

I won’t be able to sleep tonight… thanks a lot

Great looking board! Is the deck concave? What’s your thinking on that?

the deck is concaved a little bit, yes. I like these types of decks alot because you can distribute more foam to the rails, and have your feet closer to the water (i think thats a HUGE plus). I really dislike thicker boards because I cant personally feel whats going on in the board…the more foam there is, the more muted it feels, so anything you can do to lower the amount of space between your feet and the water, while still keeping volume (closer to the rails) is a benefit in my eyes.

killer! the new owner must be stoked. geez i’d find it hard to say goodbye to a board like that.
