Catamaran Surfboard. ( Pics Included ).

Made this a while ago and then forgot about it as new stuff began, sorry.

6’4" X 19"

Anyone else made one? Or is this the first ?

I made this about 8 years ago , it has ( had) been on display at the annual “Symphony on The Sand” at Freshwater Beach for several years, so heaps and heaps of people have seen it over the years.

V.V. light weight construction, chambered foam, no stringer,no rovings.Expanded aluminium grid deck, no wax, foam core fins.

Would have followed it up but I moved onto foils.

The Middle pic says the most about water entry and release I think.

What does it ride like?

Advantages/disadvantages?

That channel must have been tricky to sand…

I like it…

The big question for me is: Interesting, but is it just an idea for an unusual surfboard, or does it surf?

It appears that everything in the design has potential, but if you can’t surf it, it’s just a curiosity. Did you ever get it in the water?

Catamaran surfboards do work.

Two slender hulls are faster than one wide hull.

Ask any naval architect.

Not quite like yours, or any others,

Here’s some fotos.

The cats out of the bag.

Thanks for your replies .

Hicksy the advantage was "just to see what happened", the dis was that I didnt build it strong enough, so it touques longitudinally and flexes all over the compass. Yes the channel was a pain but all in a days work for a Swaylockian, glad I didnt put channels on it though !!!

The board paddles just the same because I kept the thickness up, it turns with a ‘side to side / big Vee’ feel and this is enhanced by the ‘twin fin and trailer’ setup once it planes.

Its funky to see the water cleaving off the central front edge and shooting directly under your feet. Like a mini Hobie Cat.

Doug, I surfed it yesterday, its good but different, I think yesterday was its last surf as the twist under pressure ( while turning ) is quite high and I heard an almighty “crack”, so I think its retired.

The touque wasnt a negative on performance just surprising,it felt like flex but in a different direction.

I’m busy with the foils for now but I’d make another one, factoring in the ‘body flex’, maybe throw a bit of carbon into it…

Regards to you both. I’ll put a few more pics up this afternoon.

Oooooooohhhhhhh Noooooo,

Not the Fat Penguin!!

that board look like if you had a bad wipe out it would impale you never the less it still looks fun to ride and i’m thinking about making one for my self

Just a few more pics and then I’m out.

Thats water, not foam dust on the board.

I take all of my designs as a serious projection and progression, all angles thought out , as best as I can, as all shapers do.

Ive done what I can with hydrofoils on a bodyboard and then a longboard, but I hope to share the foiled shortboard ( its more of a standup surfcraft) that I’m currently building. Not your standard fare, but it promises to be something quite on its own in design and performance.

( Just a teaser as this thread winds down…)
