Challenging myself, EPS/Epoxy semi fish

this board looks like it will be super fun.  i am thinking of using this same blank on a new build as well.  a 6-2x19 1/8 x27/16 tri fin.  i will use a single to double concave for mine.  but i really want to know how you like using epoxy and marko.  this will be my first eps too.  good luck!!!

i think this board will easily float you no problem and i liked the idea of a single concave and more of a thruster profile for your semifish.  i have a certain kind of board that i wont mention here that is a 5-10x20x2 1/2 with a single concave that is my favorite small wave board. similar profile as your build but a little wider tail and nose i think.  i could measure it if you like.  its rated up to 185 pounds.  its fast as heck and holds no problem in barrels.  but it also grovels marvelously in mediocre small wave surf.  i ride it twice a week at least. 6-2 19 3/4 sounds like a much faster profile with a huge amount of foam still, and i think it may turn out to be a good everyday board if you like small waves.  i will be watching this build very carefully.  i really want to hear how it surfs!!!

good luck and dont forget to post!!!

Not sure if you can see, but i pulled in the tail behind where the fins will be. Im thinking of just going plain old thruster on this one. I have a keel fish on order ( pics when its done! ), so im slowly playing around with this board and my egg.

I think the tail looks better now, not as straight.

i vote twinzer

Haha i knew you would!. I was originally going that way, but i think i might try out a simple tri fin. Or i could see if i could have both, and use the front thruster box as a place to put a lead fin for a much bigger twin fin ( like my ben aipa fibreglass twins from probox? ). I might have to try foamheads trick and make up a fin that overhangs the back of the probox, so its close to the main twin fin?.

Of course, i could very well change my mind by the time i get to glass it haha

I 2nd the twinzer motion…recko it’d suit your surfing from feedback you’ve given me from boards I ahve made you, as well as the diff boards you like…plus you like the quad set up with tiny little rears which is similar to a twinzer type feel from my experience, different but same ball park…go the Twinzer…or tell me to STFU and do whatever you want mate…

Pardon the de-railment, but how long have you had this blank in it’s “being worked on” state?  I noticed the last post you made was in October of 2011.  Have you been working on this blank for 4 months?  Can EPS blanks be kept that long without them deteriorating?  I thought the life span of an un-glassed blank was pretty short.

I’m curious because I’d like to take my sweet ass time with some blanks in the near future, and I’m curious what I can get away with (in a fairly temperature and humidity stable garage).

Oh!  And I vote thruster.

Well, i do have those ben aipa fins, which are sweet as fins.

Hmmm, you guys are making me think :( haha

On a similar type of board this setup went very well from memory. I still have both sets of fins too. Note how close together they are, they felt fast n loose.

Blake, i hope its ok haha. Im taking my sweet ass time too. I think it'll be fine, as long as it doesnt get wet, or put anything heavy on it that will bend it.

hi Mark !

have you tried those fins with the smaller at the front , and the bigger at the back , and WILL you , "if" you go "twinzer" on THIS one ?

I vote thruster , as I'd like to hear how you go riding one !

  cheers

So i pulled the tail in a little more. Sometimes i can't help but to tinker. Not sure if its a good or bad thing

If you want a true flat bottom you’ll have to adjust the shape a bit for the glass laps. I’ve made a few boards with that kind of outline and I find a slight roll in the front blended into a flat under the front foot into a slightly bigger roll in front of and under the back foot mellowed right out the back work well for me. With glass it will turn into a slight roll into a baby concave into a roll to a flat out the back.

I agree with everything you say except the quoted point. There is a large difference in final weight between a spackled/sealed board and an unspackled/sealed board. Every tiny void will soak up a bit of resin and any large void seen and unseen could really suck resin in on a rising temperature.

Thanks mate. I will be sealing it. Seems easy, and it will be a while before i glass it, so it'll have plenty of time to dry.

So, an update. Super stoked on my new very light weight fish, so i've raised this from the dead so to speak. Have reshaped the rails since adding the round tail, and i hit it with spackle this afternoon. 2nd time spackling, and this time i used demineralised water, and made it thin like mayonnaise. Boy did it make it much easier. It slops on, but at the same time is very easy to "pull" off. A lot like a hotcoat. Will leave it a few days to make sure its dry, then flip and do the deck, and i should be close to glassing. With the spackle, i'll adjust the glass to 6x66.

so you lovin the light stuff now BF ? you were against it a few years back, but its great to change and try diff stuff, I do it all the time and look back and wonder wtf was I thinking…haha, keen to see this one finished up…whats ya glassing plans ? normal cloth or getting fancy ? fins ?

Mate, my newy is light as, and feels awesome!. You are right, i wasn't too fussed before, and in fact preferred a bit of heft, but i have realised light boards can still glide and drive, but then, when you want to move it around quick, it can still happen. Glassing plans are 6x66. From research a spackled EPS board with 6x66 will still be similar weight to 4x44 glassed poly. I have a feeling it will be pretty light. Will see and report back. Just standard fibreglass mate, no funky fabrics. Fins, well, im thinking of a thruster setup, but i'll probably crack, and put a second set of rail fins nice and close to the thruster sides :).

Should see the rails, normally i do pretty boxy rails, but i've reduced the rail volume much more than i normally do, especially the tail. It's quite thin in the last 12''. What;s happened to me??!!

evolving mate, as we all do, except for the stubborn know it all types, I love learning all the time and trying different stuff and going off on different tangents…thin in the tail hey, you might even get some nice flex depending on how you glass it up, and lower rails in the eps are good mate, sounds like fun is headin your way…but dunno bout this thruster stuff…haha…

....will you also please put in a back fin box , Mark ?

You could place it far enough back for still being a thruster setup , long enough box to allow single fin movement , and yes ... four side [rail] plugs as well , if you MUST !    hahaha

I can't wait to see it finished .... and read your ride reports on it [hint hint]

....cheers mate , have FUN !

Resurection!. Have been lent some epoxy, and a blank. Im going to leave the blank for now (poly, and its gunna be an egg), and will glass this in 4x44 s glass. I know its light, but hey, I can always add another layer.

Quad setup, both on,rails and a tight cluster. Setting them up for speed speed speed, and hope the round tail and lightness add some turnyness. Im a loosey goosey twin fin fool. Can’t surf 3 fins to save myself!

Almost done. Some sanding, and boxes and plug, then im done. Hope the pics work, and itd be a bonus if the pics were the right way up even!
