Chambered Paulownia Twin Fin

Thanks to all for sharing your projects. Ive gotten heaps of info from here. Its been really helpful. Thought I would share my first wooden board.

Chambered paulownia, no glass, sealed with linseed oil, beeswax and pine resin. future fins to go on next week.

unshaped (rectangular)blank weighed 20kg

shaped blank weighed 9.2kg prior to chambering

post chambering it came out at 5.7kg

after sanding and cleaning up its finished up at 5.5kg (12lbs)

I was hoping to get it under 5kg but was nervous about busting thorugh the chambers as im pretty heavy on my feet.

I could have made the chamber walls a bit thinner and made less chambers.

I used a holesaw and jigsaw to cut out the chambers. those are the tools i had available and i dont really care what it looks like on the inside.

I guess it took me about 1hr of labour and a few days of waiting for teh glue to dry to glue up the blank.

shaping took about 3 hours and i went pretty slow.

chambering took the most time, maybe 6 hrs in total. i think i could cut the time by a lot now on the next one.

final sanding took about an hour or so to get all the bumps out. i went from 40grit to 800grit.

thanks to swied, jim and surferguy for tips and inspiration.

next one is going to be a longboard.

Thats a sweet looking board, wish we could get that wood over here in UK. I love the idea of not glassing boards, so much quicker in the finishing.

Looks fun

That’s a nice looking board. I like the fact that you are going without the glass. A thin finish really makes the board look feel more natural. Let us know how well your sealing mixture works out. I used Marine Spar Varnish on my board, and it is holding up nicely. I’m also curious to know how you plan on attaching the fins.

hi Swied,

I decided not to glass to keep weight down but also to make it as green as possible. the only non eco friendly thing is the epoxy glue. since ive done this glue up ive sourced a plant based epoxy glue/resin so the next one i make will be 100% plant based.

i had one of TW’s alaias for a while and it was just sealed with linseed oil. it was fine and just needed to be oiled every few weeks. if it got mouldy i just sanded it back a bit and re-oiled.

im applying the linseed at the moment. once ive done a few coats ill be melting and filtering some beeswax and pine resin and painting it on a thin coat. the wood should absord it a bit and there will also be an outer protective layer. i figured i better put a vent/drain plug in just in case i get some water seeping thourgh, but i think its unlikey if i do it right.

regarding the fins im putting future boxes in. Ive chambered where they are going so will need to put some inserts in or use some pour foam to fill the chambers.

great build thead. looks very similar to my first one… i glassed mine as i was not confident in my woodworking skills. but im building 4 more over the next few weeks inc a 9’6" log . i hope to finish them without glass also.
