change colour of the board before glosscoating

Hello people i'm a new entry on this great forum.

I made a mini malibu..after the hotcoating i sanded it but it looks too white and i would put some colour on it.I would like to make the bottom and the rails acid green (masking the stringer and the logo first).Do you think that if i sprayed the waterbased acrylic colour on and then glosscoat it would work?

i've never tried spraying color befor glosscoat. i've heard that people have had trouble with that though.

what kind of resin are you using? epoxy? poly?

check this thread : http://www2.swaylocks.com/forums/first-board-first-post-1-eps-carbon-fiber-epoxy-54-biscuit-probox-5-fin

paint after your final resin coat, then cover with clear spray. much easier and looks like pretty good  results.

I use poly so i think i shouldn't have problems with waterbase colours. But to spray a clear coat on i think would be the better idea. The big problem after spraying a clear coat is that it takes forever to kick, and all the little bits of dust in the air stick on it.Should the clear coat be wetsanded and buffed to have that nice mirror effect? This is the board anyway...i've just done the hotcoating on the deck.

Welcome to sways, and good effort for a first board!

A gloss coat over a full bottom and rail spray is likely to have problems, and even if you got the gloss to lay down any ''burns'' when polishing would take out your color. If you do it tape all the way up on the color line and gloss the whole colored area in one shot. (No rail seam)

IMO you should just gloss it clear and learn all the lessons you'll get from that, but if you really want the green bottom and rails an automotive-type color-then-clear acrylic laquer (like a Surftech) or a marine paint like Awlgrip, etc. would give better results.

Of course, this being sways, someone will shortly post pics of the perfect polished gloss over acrylic done by their ten year old in their garage.

LMAO

Finally i made it!!I painted with a waterbased acylic and then sprayed clear coat on and this is the result.....

I think that the clearcoat seals perfectly the poly so it would make it last even longer. The clear coat i used has some uv filters and ment to be evry resistant to sea water.Tell me your opinions please!

Fishbone,

I think it looks great, but that’s coming from a newbie.  The most important thing is that you did it yourself.  Keep it up!

Nice job!  What brand color and clear coat did you end up using?

Thanks Guys!I used the 300 max meyer clear coat, wetsanded with a 1200 1500 and 2000 grit and then polished it with a 3M marine polishing compound. But next time i think i'm gonna use a polyurhetanic clear coat because it's much easier to be polished. I really hope that i will become a good shaper and a good glasser.I'm really living a dream! Thanks to everyone on Sway because withouth all of you i couldn't step up so fast.

I forgot to say....i used a waterbased acrylic..brand polycolor
