Channels on longer boards

Was thinking of adding channels to my 8’ egg … anybody think this might be worth a shot, or more likely a waste of time?

It’s otherwise ready to glass … once I fix the gouge I put in the rail with that stupid dragon skin :frowning:

Do it… take pics… and report back!

just coached someone through the shaping process on an 8’-er with Harbour-style nose channels and some double concave out the back…board came out lookin’ GREAT!!!

I’m not a huge fan of channels. My experience is they work on fast walled up waves, but they hinder manuverability. If you’re surfing Great Lakes, then you don’t need them… actually they probably won’t really hurt you there either ; )

They’re also a bitch to glass.

Nice…

Do you put a concave in the nose as well, or just channels?

gently rolled bottom, then cut in the channels. see…

Ahhhh…yesssss, yessss…I seeeee…hmmmmm…

I’m gonna have to try that…

I did a board a while ago with four channels it was 7’8" i recall with the channels about 1/3" deep and about 18" long maybe a bit more. Went like lightening on smooth surfaces but had some problems in really choppy conditions—over all not a bad board, but it had that one set onideal conditions where it excelled. i’ve since gone over to the 5 fin bonzer world, since they seem more versitle in my surf environment

I’ve been using (Harbor) nose channels, my rendition is softer/more gentle curves than soulstice, for the last 18 boards (8-10’ers)! I love 'em! Nose ride GREAT and they don’t slow down on those occasional fast breaking beach breaks we have here.

A few boards ago I wanted to experiment more and did a 9’4", 21" wide (balsa comp) rounded pin, single to double concave rear and nose rails up front. Fast long board and turns on a dime, gives ya 9 cent change!

Experiment and let us know howit goes!

agreed. i just redesigned a board i made awhile back with nose channels, and intend to have a less drastic roll under the nose with an easier transition to the channel than pictured.
