Cheap Cut Lap Tool

This little tip probably deserves its own thread, but there is a device (I’ll have look up the name) that is used for auto pin lines. some kind of roller with paint. You can use it for surfboards to make perfect pin lines without tape.

That’s what I said. WITHOUT TAPE!!!.

Davo Surfboards has a master pinliner that uses one. He free hands the pins and they look like a … I don’t know. Just perfect. Give me till tommorrow to get the name.

And I’ll post a pic of the pin line done with it.

Greg,

Do you mean the Beugler (www.beugler.com) Striping Tool?

Hey Jase,

Do you just say you did a cutlap on your HWS???

PJ will have your B@lls for that…

A quote from his website on Board No3

Quote:
I rode my 10'2" hollow...A lot of board, considering the conditions, but it was a blast... I surfed it for about 4 .5 hours...Upon exiting the water, I thought the board felt heavy...You know where I'm going with this... Yeah, it leaked...It leaked where I lapped the rails and did a zip cut... I probably cut into the underlying layer of glass a bit, enough to weaken it and it to split right along the cut line...I'm thinking the compression of air while duck diving/ punching through forced the weakness to separate...Oh well...
I realized the vent hole would never allow it to dry out ...My remedy was to cut the rails off ( It took about 5 minutes with a utility knife)...That is the only way to be sure that the interior will fully dry out...and it dried fine overnight...I re-shaped the tail to be a round pin while I had the chance...

Just be carefull…

Cheers for that mate, but kind of a happy accident occured yesterday while doing the laps on the bottom, all the sodding tape fell off as soon as the resin/cloth touched it so I had my first experience of free laps. I wish i’d planned it as I’d have cut the cloth a bit neater but it actually seems to have gone OK apart from a few straggly stringy bits here and there. Sod the cut laps from now on I think. The reason I’d gone with cuts on the hollows is that was what I’d read most about, and with the layers around the rails to use as a guide/camouflage for the cuts seemed to make sense, plus, I always assumed that cleaning the laps up when free lapping would be a real pain in the arse, not so eh! I used the Hexcell 6oz flat weave cloth for this board and it seems to be pretty flat on the laps so shouldn’t take much work to get them ready for laying the next deck lam on.

Did this PJ geezer sand the edges of the laps flat after cutting before laying the next lam? I did on my previous and haven’t had any splitting on them, but then again he will almost definately be surfing more and better than I do.

I sanded my laps before doing the other side, extend the glass past the point where the rails meet the main part of the board.

Good Luck…

Dave, yes that is the one. I’ve seen the pinlines that thing can do and it is amazing. All free hand. Do you think we should post that separately for others to see?

As a Carpenter I see traditional and valuable skills lost daily to convenience tools and handy gadgets. In one hand I reckon that its a god thing as it aids productivity and opens techniques and finishes to everyday people in a short time. But on the other hand, we loose so many traditional skills and techniques passed down generations of craftsmen, that they soon become forgotten. “Graft and practice, blood, sweat and tears and fine results” that’s what my Great Grandfather said to me the day he gave me my first block plane. I’ve still got it and its always been the inspiration to learn new skills!!

As a result, bout a year ago I bought myself a little present one rainy afternoon. It was a pinstriping brush, some paints and a DVD and book by a dude called Kaffka. I’ve spent hours and hours practicing and each time I get better and better…

Your hands look weathered and worn like someone who knows what to do buy has been doing it a bit too long. Might I suggest some lotion? You do however have a lovely brown eye.

You can do better than that, Ben.
