Hey, I’m in the process of building my first board (tri fin short board) and need some help finding cheap fins/box. I know I could make my own from wood but if I can find a place to get fins and boxes for cheap ill just buy them. I was thinking of buying the Future fins and boxes from foamEZ but it would cost me like $70 shipped which is too much for my first board I think. I rather FCS or Future setup. Anyone know of site that I can get both boxes and fins from cheap?
$70 for fins and boxes shipped isnt that bad. Also, dont forget to consider that you have to route the holes out, do you have a friend with the futures jig and a router who knows what he is doing? You could prob go to your local shaper and get em to do the routing, but that would add some to your cost.
Check out Probox, you can prob get a set of the plastic production fins along with boxes and install jigs/bit for not much more than the futures rout… Plus its a super easy install, and you can use the fcs fins you already have, so maybe you dont need to get fins anyway thus reducing your cost.
If cost is the only factor glass em on.
Also, what foam is that? Is that the pink XPS stuff made not by Dow but…?
I don’t have any fins at all. The foam is EPS foam used for insulation (thats all I can find around here in the city).
Also I have no surf shops around here to install the boxes so I would need to do that myself by hand as this page explains http://www.surfersteve.com/fins.htm
If $70 is the cheapest I can get a future or fcs setup, then I guess I got to just glass on some fins. Is there specific types of fins that are used to glass on? Or can I just glass on any fins? I ask this because about one inch of the fin will be under the foam?
Alright, so I got my fins and boxes on the way and I got my epoxy and glass. The only thing I still need is a vent. Does anyone know if there is anything I can use as a vent from HomeDepot? If not, what’s a good site I can get one from?
I know you already have your boxes on the way,but in the future if $ is tight when making a board you can always use scrap cloth from your build to make a set of fins and glass them on.Plenty of good fin threads on swaylocks to guide you in the right direction.
