I saw this and though you all might be intrested BRASILIA, Brazil (Reuters) - Prison inmates in Brazil’s sun-kissed surf mecca of Florianopolis can now work their way to freedom by repairing surfboards in return for shorter prison sentences. At a prison workshop in Florianopolis, inmates who labor for three days fixing up battered surfboards win one day off their jail sentences, plus 63 U.S. cents per day. The project, dubbed “Freedom on the Waves,” is the first step toward installing a surfboard factory at the penitentiary in Santa Catarina state, the state Justice Ministry said on Wednesday, when Justice Minister Aloysio Nunes Ferreira visited the prison. To date, however, only six of the prison’s 584 inmates have learned the trade. “The idea is to use the space for a factory, but we don’t know when that’s going to happen,” said a state Justice Ministry spokeswoman. “We hope the minister’s visit will speed things up.” The surfboard workshop aims to reduce tension between inmates, improve prisoners’ self-esteem and give them a taste of what is waiting for them on the beaches of Florianopolis once they are freed. Tensions often flare in Brazil’s overcrowded prisons, prompting violent riots and frequent breakouts. Brazil has 337 jails housing 233,000 inmates, the Justice Ministry said.
