That Hobie is absolutely nothing like a GP Wedge. I don't know what gave you that idea. Hobie had a series of Propper Models from around 1967 to the early 70s. The Wedge was the worst of the lot. It was very similar to the Weber Strato V pictured in another recent post on this forum. Just about every one of those transitional deep V boards were real dogs. Horrid boards.
Here's a pic of that TW Hobie. Bears absolutely no resemblance to a GP Wedge. None. Nada.
It "sounded" similar to the GP from the description Hobie gave, I have never seen one or talked to a shaper about it. The GP I rode (borrowed from a friend when my Bob White #7 got smashed) had a "V" that started just in front of the fin, not as deep as a Farrelly or Strato V. We'll have to agree to disagree on the GP!

Then it probably wasn't a G P Wedge. The Propper Wedge had a ridiculous deep V that ran all the way out the tail. That gave it a diamond tail and at its thickest it was easily 4 to 5 inches in the tail. It was very similar to the Weber Strato V pictured in that other recent thread.
The board in the foreground of this pic is an 8'10 GP Wedge that I owned from 1982 to around 1988. It was re-shaped, re-glassed, and sold.
Second board from te left looks sweet.
6'9" Freeline shaped for me by John Mel in 1980. Classic California point surf single fin. I still have and use it.
NO it was a 1968 Hobie GP Wedge, my friend still has teh 8-10 i rode: http://hartford.craigslist.org/spo/4011178906.html 4-5 inches thick at teh tail? NO way! It was no more than 3.5 inches, a shallow "V". About 5' wide diamond tail. QED
This pic shows the V extending all the way out the tail. Not "shallow" by any means.
well, ok, not "shallow", but not like a farrelly stringerless or weber strato v, not that extreme at all, unless you had a very different year/model GP…
The original Farrelly Stringerless had no V at all. The later, shorter version had far less V than other V bottom shapes of that era. My GP Wedge was 8'10" (As I said before) and was probably made within weeks of your friend's 8'8". The logos were identical to the ones seen in that craigslist ad. Large GP lam on the deck toward the tail, and a small Hobie diamond near the nose with Propper's name in it.
