chipfish, pics from skater

here’s my 5’6 fish. not too good at this photo attach stuff.

more pics should follow if i can work it out.

another. it must be easier than this.

good looking boards skater

how dose this fin stetup go

think i’m getting the hang of it now. my brain hurts. hopefully surfing tomorrow on that beat-up twinny in the other pic.

its an old experiment, was actually a single fin til recently then i thought i’d change it.

it used to be an 8’2 windsurfer now its 5’ ( to cut a very long story short ). literally! cheers, james

the setup goes well in small waves.loads of drive but still loose coz fin bases in line.

i use small sides in bigger waves or go for my 6’3 ‘normal’ board instead

cheers for posting them !

have you ever ridden it as a twinny …with just those CURVED fins ? (I’ve always wondered how THAT would go ??)

Also , a small trailer fin , overhanging the back of the box , may work well with those curved fins , in up to maybe chest-high surf ?

if you ever try either or both of THOSE setups , please let us know on this thread , how they go …

cheers mate

ben

hi again !

I can’t quite read the dimensions on the stringer …

what is the width , and the nose and tail width , please ?

also , what size is that back fin ? [it looks a bit big for a back fin , in fact for that size board , it looks a bit big as a SINGLE fin , to me !]

On a 5’ board with a fin box , I would go something like a 5" base and 7" deep fin , with maybe 2-3" rake , as a SINGLE fin …have you tried anything along THOSE lines on it ?

[if that was a bit loose / less drivey for your liking , you could maybe add a couple of gs sized side fins …something like 3 x3".]

… just some thoughts …

I’d also give bonzer runners a shot in that [but uncanted , unless you want to mould a base , and make your own ?]

one more plug , behind the existing ones , would give you the four fin “quad setup” option , too… or a five fin bonzer setup …

LOTS of potential with that board , really !

…do you kneel or stand on it , by the way ?

 cheers

hi good to hear from ya.

dimensions for the the little twinny are 5 x 21 x 4 ,nose 19 3/4, tail 17 3/4.

i used that with a 6" single, mainly coz one of the sides snapped out so i knocked the other off too.

originally it was an 8’2 pintail windsurfer then i chopped it up, long story short, made a quad , same shape as it is now.

if you look closer at the 2 board pic you’ll see where the old fin positions were til they gradually fell off.

the bigger board is 5’6 x 23 x 3 7/8. nose 19 1/2 , tail 16 1/2

the single fin is 8" deep x 5" base, i used it as a single recently and it went well.

its actually quite an upright fin over most of its surface area and pretty flexy.

also , yes have got some small sides- fcs gl

given just my 3 fin positions i think ive tried every combo possible ( compared to your boards relatively few )

also have a 7" cutaway but prefer the bigger flexy.

not tried as a twin with curved yet but did with fcs rusty fins. was ok but i like loads of drive and speed.

have a fin box adapter to take rear fcs so will try that someday

finally i surf them both stand-up.

good info , thanks James !

have you made any fibreglass 6x6" twin FINS for it ? …I reckon THEY would be good !

And , WOULD you consider putting just one extra plug , for an extra [back] one-tabbed fibreglass fin , for a quad setup ?

Something like the gl / gs template , double-foiled , [homemade from fibreglass], would be good , I reckon , for a quad setup .

How deep is the “butt crack” on that 5’er board ?

and how far up are your existing back plugs from the tail ?

[ I just wish I was clever with ‘photoshop’ or whatever , because I would like to be able to draw in what I mean on that photo [ and on a sideon rocker photo [please?] , too ] for the fin templates and positions . ]

4" thick …

what do you weigh , how tall are you , and how do you find paddling it , if you don’t mind me asking ?

cheers mate !

  ben

i made some 6" x 5" plywood fins with fcs tabs but 1 snapped at the tabs on bottom turn.

might try again one day. not sure i trust myself to install fcs plugs . would probably ruin it.

could pay some one who knows i guess.

on the 5’ the butt crack is 5" 1/2 and 13" tip to tip.

yeh 4" is pretty thick . i think its actually more than that! i weigh 73kg and about 5’10 tall.

paddling is fine, when the waves are 1’ i catch everything.i dont use it above 2’ - use the 5’6.

its at least as buoyant as an 8’ mini mal but lighter, wider all over, flatter and tons faster/ looser once on your feet.

the very first time i took it out ,± 4yrs ago i wasnt even sure i would be able to ride it , being so small but first wave

it flew and i impressed myself being able to really surf it properly and even more so the satisfaction of my own creation

actually working ( way better than i expected ).

no pics of me riding any of them but will try to post some sideon and bottom pics. james

hi mate !

make some 6 x 6" fibreglass fins for it , and FEEL the difference !

cheers

ben

hi James !

thanks for mentioning this on the 5’8 bushfire as a 5 fin thread .

I am ‘resurrecting’ this thread ,

because …

I will be trying surfing [my bushy fish]

as an “inline three finner” tomorrow , all going well…

[ie: I’m taking out the two front side small GS/ GL fins , and using two G6 template fibreglass fins in the back side plugs , and a TS1 ‘Multifins’ template in the finbox , all in line with each other , as in your photos ! cheers for reminding me of that , mate …]

stay tubed !

ben

looking forward to hearing how you get on.

i’ve got an fcs finbox adapter so i can experiment with various smaller ( than 8" !)

middle fins.

cheers James !

…I’d be keen to hear how a GS / GL trailer goes , with the curved sideys

ben

…I’m off now , dawno with eno [‘sandgroper’] tomoz …catchya mate !

hi Skater !

just resurrecting this thread again , [I hope you don’t mind?!] because I wondered …

Since you last posted on this thread of yours , have you made any new fibreglass side or back fins for this setup yet ?

…or , put in an extra plug or two , so you can move those side fins a bit ?

cheers

 ben
