Hi, long time lurker, first time poster. This seemed like the best place to get an educated response to this question.
I’ve currently got a diamond tailed groveller and after various knocks and bumps I’m getting a bit fed up or repairing the diamond tail, and fancy mixing things up a bit. I’m thinking of chopping the the tail off where the diamond starts and turning it into a squash. It’ll mean losing about 3/4" off the tail.
My question is, will this ruin the way the board sufs due to the fin positioning? Also it’s a Rapidfire Firewire with the bamboo deck. Would I be asking for delam trouble if I start sawing across the bamboo?
Don't do it. Just beef up the tail with some six ounce. If you cut the diamond off it will be just as big a deal to repair. If the shape was supposed to be a squash tail, it would have been made that way. Compsands are usually only four ounce. A six ounce layer top and bottom overlapped on the tailblock will tighten it up.
However, if I did decide to go ahead with ‘the chop’ do you think the back fin moving from 3"5/8 to just under 3" from the tail is going to cause the board to surf like a dog?

If the board was awesome you would not want to cut it down........
So........why does your board surf like a dog? Did you try different fin set ups? Are you out of shape?
I'd love to hack the tail off of your $700 surfboard. Maybe a longboard center fin box????? Maybe not.......
Maybe we could make it a square tail quad......Yeah...I vote square tail quad.....
