Looks like a cool challenge!!

not sure about the silver pigment it at the old infront factory at some stage we had some siler glass DVS sure did know how to torture glassers
Right you are RA -an 18footer…when you worked with Peter Mo ?..did you do that silver pigment ?..that was cool.
I live not too far from Juan Rodriguez shop and having him do some paint work on a SUP I shaped. I spoke with him about the shape off. He was brief about it but he said they're also allowed two nails and a wire and power source to hotwire the foam. I laughed when he told me that especially when he said how little amount of tools are allowed. Juan's a great guy and a no bullshitter. Tells it how it is which is the way I like it. Been nagging at his ear to let me come learn a few things or two from him. Hoping one day he'll give but not expecting it. His wood boards are beautiful.
–Awesome Kayu & RA, that’s my next project, hanging in the rafters…
chunks welded into a 16’-0" prone blank. “chunking it”.
i think i may have glassed it, it was a challenge i tell you and it was 18 feet
DVS free-shaped a sixteen foot open ocean paddle board from a solid block of EPS…and it won the Molakai Challenge under Mick Dibetta !
i would love to see this those rules sound great, all the high profile bretent shapers should have to enter it would be hillarious , some of the most well known shapers in the world have never shaped a board dont you think thats funny
wow has anyone got any pics of the finished boards
Depends on how you define an AM.…there’s a lot of talened shapers out there, certainly no shortage of them.
Yeah putting amateurs in there would definitly be wasting foam haha VAESKE.
I just thought it was cool, like freehand shaping? No templates? So they’d use a batton for the outline? Then go for it all by eye?
Dumb idea not allowing tools to measure and only one power tool. Yeah I shape by feel and adjust the rails depending on the laminators cuts. Measuring is key, and having the right tool to get the job done helps a lot. Still I like to have the board there to feel all the way through, by having it off to the side it gives them way too much room for interpretation.
Styrofoam is 95% air so its no big deal to shape and “waste” a bit. A good recycling program for the end cuts and dust would eliminate a bit of waste by volume though.
I have shaped many chunked out styro’s over the years, and its not that big a deal, if you have the skills. Going up against a backyard shaper would be like a hot knife through butter, and you wouldn’t stand a chance.
fun concept, just need to expand it a bit and include a few of backyard up & comers. But why would any established pro want to go toe-to-toe against a garage builder w/the chance of losing?
They did something very similar to this at one of the last “Sacred Craft” shows. It was at the San Diego Convention Center and Ryan Burch, Gary Strahlie (spelling???) and one other shaper had to shape a board out of a massive chunch of foam. I believe it was a block that was 11’ x 8" x 20 something wide. They all ended up shaping out boards around the 6 foot mark. It was super cool to see that going down but man it was wasteful…agree with Vaeske.
3D scanner would be an easier way to determine a winner. Accurate results, yet ironic to the set-challenge of cloning w/out measuring sticks.
8’x2’x2’ for a single shortboard? **- If stringered, you could get up to 8 surf blanks out of each of those billets.
Shape ~24 boards by time that day is done and** give them to charity for auction/raffle**…
found a few blocks of foam washed up on the beach
from flotsam debris,Tsunami spewtum?
I have a daydream every time I walk by…
…
they just look at me and say ''Why?
AM I UP HERE HIGH AND DRY"
… … …
Then I think where’s the camera
…so I can docu the effort…
then I get on with another job
… …
one day I can rough maybe
five hand boards and three paipos
in an hour…who’s gonna glass em…?
they all will be styrofoam, the green solution.
