I’ve been surfing for 15 years and I just started shaping a board. Wow. I love it. I’ve got the basic stand, lights, planer and a shed in the yard, but …
ANY advice on clean up? Foam dust is everywhere. Foam dust in the grassy yard (poisonous to pets?). On the clothes (now in the washer & dryer!) Besides a shop vac, and facial/lung protection, (my skin also is kinda wierd from the foam). Do you guys where full body suits for dust protection? I live in cold water so i can’t just jump in the ocean either…
What should I do?
Any Advice from you pros would be greatly appreciated!!! thanks in advanced to all.
Think about building yourself a simple shaping room …thats what I did…In fact I´m building a new shaping room and planning to use the old one as my glassing room… small but works just fine 8’6" x 11’…
You will get used to it.Its not too bad really if you wear a mask.A vaccum may help a bit but not much. That is unless you can make an outlet for your sanding blocks and screen.Worst thing about home building is that it will cling to your clothes and spread like the plague throughout the house and car.Nothing is worse than cruising down the highway and getting a big blast of dust in your eyes. One way of disposing of foam dust is to pile it in the back of your truck and take a late night ride down the highway…just kidding…just kidding. We had a shop cat once that loved to curl up in the foam dust for a snooze…its dead now.
The best way to clean-up the dust and stuff is to ask your wife/girlfriend to do it while your at the pub with your buddies soaking a few coldies. Mike
yep you just have to live with it…I have a shower next to my shaping room. I just jump in there before going into the house but I still find f-dust in the bed. Home Depot has those painters throw-a-way paper coveralls. I have never used them but that would help. I do all my heavy take down of the foam outside under the macadamia trees. it looks like snow for awhile. I just rake the foam dust into the leafs. I have yet to see any dead animals around.
Marlin, Check out the new vacuum system offered by Clark foam. For around $300, all your problems can go away. -Carl
as far as i know its not for sale yet, they have the demos here and there, but none for sale, still working out bugs i guess, I love how it domps into a trashcan. Cant wait till they call with the… Its ready… I like the wallplate for the planer too.
there is a quite easy solution for this, baby powder. works very well for sanding too and you will not even get itchy (I talk about the real itchy, the fiberglass sanding itch). just rub it on and that’s that.
Good tip mick, works great. Another one we used after heavy grinding on plugs or molds, the old guys at the shop swore by it …is when you take your shower start with as cold of water as you can stand washing with, this will rinse grinding dust off of you and keep your pores closed, then switch to as hot as you can stand and wash as normal. This will open your pores and help remove the rest of the glass from them,I always did it and it seemed to help. The best way is to limit exposure and apply baby powder to exposed areas…I am still suprised there is no one here named “Itchy 1” seems like a natural name choice…peace and waves…
Talc works great, cool to warm shower works great too. Those paper overalls work too, but get really hot and sweaty. Long sleeve cotton shirts are good too, and really cheap at thrift shops. You can pick them up when you go there to get your glassing pants and shoes. Pierre Cardin make a good co-ordinated outfit, but your boss will think your earning too much money.

Actually, I have one on order as we speak. I ordered it on monday, It will probably come with the blank delivery on thursday. (hopefully) I got to check out the components of the system on monday also, awesome. Since I paid $325. for it, I am sure it isn’t a demo system, although I was told that Doug Haut has one (that he loves) and he’s had it for a bit, his is probably a demo. I’ll be posting a review of the system as soon as it is installed. -Carl
