I have a question in regards to finishing preshapes. I’ve seen a video of a shaper using a sander to get the grooves out of the shape and then finish off by hand. I’m assuming he used a very soft pad at a low speed with the appropriate grit sandpaper.
Has anyone else tried this, and what sort of pad, grit of sandpaper did you use?
“Cleaning up milled blanks(pre-shapes).” I’ve been powersanding blanks for awhile now. Mostly "Surfblanks Aus.(Midgets’). Primarily because this foam is much harder than most blanks. I use a medium or hard pad(although I have used a soft pad in a pinch) and 80 grit. I was recently told by an Aussy shaper that I should use screen. The reason being the screen wouuld eliminate the scratches caused by coarser grades of sand paper. I have been using my Milwaukee turned down to 1 or 2. Slow enouygh to bog it down if I want to. I hit it pretty good out on the flats and then back off on the rails, nose and tail. I can see where the screen would eliminate extra hand sanding. I even powersand my hand shapes after I roughed them.
