cloth inlay - shortboard?

Anyone had any trouble with a cloth inlay on a shortboard? I’m just worried about the weight it’ll add.

By the way,

Board #1 -

I think I got a bit overzealous shaping the tail and nose, they are REALLY thin…

And narrow!

I have a 6’8" x 20.5 x 2.5 with thin nose and tail that floats me tits underwater when the board is completely submerged. I can scrape bottom ducking in 4’ of water, with a 4/3 wetsuit on! Unfortunately, I can’t paddle it well enough to get any decent waves with it.

Weight of cloth inlay accounts for amount of resin that it saturates. You still probably have to glass normal, if you want a strong board. The cloth itself should weigh very little.

I have just finished a 6’10" with a full bottom cloth inlay and it did not add a noticable amount of weight. The type of cloth you use should be really light weight to start with, dont use canvas for example. Good luck.

The width is close to what I’d hoped for, though the tail and nose thickness…

Well, we’ll see when she’s glassed (with a nice cloth inlay…).

I had to start somewhere!

Cotton fabric saturates with very little resin. Go for it.

Thanks Kevin, JR and LeeDD,

We’ll see what comes out in the end, haven’t selected the fabric yet, but it’ll be a light one!

Nice Pic!

Our boards are nearly identical in outline and thickness, including flow.

Mine, at 20.5 probably is wider.

Now we can see who the better surfer is, as I can’t really ride mine at Ocean Beach or anywhere that needs paddling distance and speed. Well, I can ride it fine, I just don’t get any good waves with it.

Tail looks a little thin… but personally I like my noses foiled a lot - that one looks pretty good to me. Sure it’ll sink a bit, but you’ll be loving the lack of weight when you start snapping that thing around. Outline looks pretty darn good for #1… congrats.

It aint over yet though… good luck.

LeeDD - I templated that board at 20 inches, haven’t done the final measurement. As for waves, I live in New Jersey so we’ll see what comes down the pike to try it out on - they just did a beach replenishment in Atlantic City and it gave us some pretty punchy breaks to play with (already snapped the nose off my new Lost… that was a b*$ch to fix).

rKelly - Thanks, I’m starting on #2 tomorrow morning since I’m nowhere near set up for glassing yet. Have blank, will shape. It definitely is not over yet!

I’m still waiting on a shipment of foam from Insulfoam, once that gets in I can really get started on the longboard I want to make - 4 or more stringers, 10’ single fin…can’t wait…drooling as we speak…

as for the board in the pic, it’s still 2.75 thick in the middle, I overshaped the nose and tail trying to blend the rocker in. Next time I’ll work on it a little slower…just starting to learn and I’m stoked.
